Should there be "gimmick" characters? And Is hating them just a lack of skill?

Bear with me here..

For a while, I dreaded fighting against Little Macs in For Glory. It seemed like they would always make obvious, predictable mistakes, and yet I lacked the skill to punish them, or they'd get off a lucky smash/KO punch. It was only once I improved a little, and learned to play around his attacks that I started to enjoy the match-up. KO punch starts to feel less ****ty when your're winning and a stock ahead, after all.

In my case, hating the matchup was just a lack of skill. However, it seems like there are still other characters that I just don't enjoy fighting against at all, and I wonder if it's because I've gone up against a lot of annoying players using them, or if it's because I just don't like way they affect gameplay.

For example; Rosalina. She's a nightmare because normal spacing seems to go out the window, and Luma is a constant annoyance; blocking attacks and interfering with grabs. As much as it's technical to play "as" her, playing against her doesn't feel as singular as fighting against more traditional characters. Getting attacks blocked by Luma doesn't feel like a result of the opponent's skill (even when it is), it just feels like an annoying trait you have to actively deal with.

That said, do you think that "gimmick" characters work in a game like Smash? How much do you think a character should be able to deviate from the average character's "rules", before it changes the game too much? Do you think that hating a matchup is a lack of skill/understanding or annoying strategies, and not the gimmick?

If you see it as a gimmick rather than a different playstyle, you're already in trouble by underestimating your opponent.
Go take the time to learn the MU with your main because with 50+ Characters in this game, MU knowledge is hugely important for each of them.

Well, it's not always a matter of difficulty for me. To compare, while Olimar has never given me a hard time I still don't particularly enjoy playing against him. Likewise, even when I win against a Rosalina player at roughly the same level as myself or manage to beat someone who's clearly better, I've never enjoyed the matches the way I do with other matchups.

While I think it's true that a playstyle can "feel" like a gimmick when it's difficult to deal with, I don't think it's the same thing. That said, I don't think there are actually many "true" gimmick characters in Smash right now. I just want to know if other people enjoy playing against characters like Rosalina that go beyond the average single model player.
