Should the timer be taken into consideration?

I sometimes wonder why we give the previous Smash games a whole 8 minutes. Maybe if the timer was half that then it would be easier to hold people's interests. It would also cause people playing the game to be more aggressive to try and gain a lead before time is up.

Hell people have been stressing not to tack on rule sets from previous games to Smash 4 because it's not going to be exactly the same. You could even take it to the next level. Make it 1 stock 1-2 minute matches or something. 3/5's for regular tourney matches etc.

How much time should we put on the clock for Smash 4??

Why not take it to the next level after that, then?

1 stock, 10 seconds, game speed set to high, Sudden Death from the beginning.

Well the very first 1v1 4 stock with 8 minute match was a camping contest. 3 stocks 8 minutes is going to be the norm for a while if not permanently. They've done the 1 stock thing to Brawl in order to try and balance the roster and make it more of a spectator sport. And honestly it works with Brawl. Smash 4 though? I think that 3 stocks 8 minutes will work better for that game than it will with Brawl.

inb4 wait until the game comes out.

Well let's talk about the stock count first. More stocks are better for showing the more skilled player in the same way more sets do. While there are always issues of time constraint, I don't think having fewer stocks is a great solution. Also, having a big comeback of several stocks is always hype, so excitement in that department isn't an issue.

And then comes the issue of the timer. You don't want to cut it too short because if the time starts to run out, the person losing is pretty much forced to approach to make up the deficit before the clock runs out. The less time there is, the easier it becomes to gain a lead and then just run away. In that sense, less time doesn't promote aggressive play in general, it can become more like a cat and mouse game. And the amount of time a match takes is also dependent on characters and match ups. Some match ups simply require a character to slowly beat out the opponent in neutral, while others may have a strong enough punish game that stocks just keep dropping. You want to be able to give players enough time to play however they want so as to not skew the balance towards certain types of characters.

I'm not saying 4-stock 8 minutes will be the perfect formula for smash 4, but we have to be aware what the effects are for different amounts of stock and time.

My only issue with having a timer at all is that it allows you to win by stalling with an advantage.

I'm all for a 3-stock 3-min rule though, if a timer must be used.

Hmmm maybe our threads should be combined as responses tend to be similar in nature. Your OP is focused on time and mine on stocks but the subjects sort of go hand-in-hand. Hm.
