Should Smash be community based?

In terms of development.

Given how big Smash as a franchise is, it only would make sense to have the Smash community part-take in its development. Since a Smash game takes approximately three years to fully bloom, it could only increase the interest for the upcoming Smash installment if fans had their say taken into account during the early and late stages of Smash's development. Basically have a Smash developer address the fan base every three months, updating on the progress and asking for input based around the progress.

It would be a way to increase the potential of the game, and boost overall fan satisfaction. Of course, not everyone can be satisfied, but it comes closer to being able to do so, over having closed doors.

It depends. Are you referring to the area where people want Freddy Frazbear, Steve, Shrek, and Goku in smash, or people like us in smashboards

The two sides are not mutually exclusive~ ;3

It's a good idea in theory, but when you have that many people with such radical and disparate ideas, it's going to cause more difficulty than it's worth. Too many cooks and whatnot.

To be fair, that's why the Smash Ballot and such feedback surveys exist: to give fans the opportunity to have their voices heard in a way that's open to the community, yet suitably distant from hands-on development.

No, most fans aren't game developers and wouldn't be able to provide adequate feedback for the game. Playing a lot of games, does not mean one knows how to make a good game.

Fan input is a good thing to a point... problem though is that more often than not the more vocal people are those who aren't happy.

Furthermore, there are certain aspects of a game including balance... arguably the most debated, and bashed part of any game, that very few people can give more than an average opinion on... fewer who can do it without bias based on what character they play. I know I am not an expert in this area... but boy do I have my opinions.

Fan input should always be considered... but in certain areas needs to be taken with caution.

It`s an interesting idea to have a community help with development, that`s why I see game developers inviting players to test Alpha and Beta versions of there games.

I feel that if the smash community has a higher involvement for future smash games, only high tier players would be involved. They have a higher understanding of mechanics and can provide some valuable feed back.

I mean, end of thread. This is it.

Time / money / probable consumer satisfaction are all taken into consideration when making decisions what goes into a game. Developers aren't oblivious to fan reaction, even though they're not telling you about it directly.

That's not to say that developers are stupid. If say, higher level players got a chance to talk to any of the Smash 4 devs, they'll most likely take whatever the players said and think about what that means in the context of the game.

That's how Q&A / testing works.. as people test a game during its development period, conclusions get formed indirectly and directly by the thoughts expressed by testers. Indirectly, in this case, means that an opinion expressed gets used by developers to form a larger point about what they're trying to do. It might even be the opposite of the opinion expressed, just to make something in the game more effective in whatever way. For example, "oh no this hallway is spooky i don't like this" said by a tester as a negative experience could be turned into "okay so we need to put more of the scary stuff all over this game" said by the developers, to amplify the horror element in those particular places.

No. In general, consumers have awful ideas and really don't know what they want. A lot of people say that air dodging is OP and it should put you into helpless or be removed entirely, but then they'd get pissed when they get juggled and can't get out of it. A lot of people say they want higher shield stun, but then they'd get pissed when they can't retaliate after blocking an attack. A lot of people say they want the Ice Climbers back, but then they'd get pissed when they have to deal with the inevitable inescapable infinite caused by the complications of controlling two characters at once. A lot of people say they want like an enormous cast with every character returning, but then they'd get pissed when the game takes forever to make and winds up being incredibly unbalanced. Even if they take the advice of the unwashed masses, the same people who gave that advice will wind up hating the result.

Also, obviously, conflicts of interest. The extremely loud Melee fanbase will demand wavedashing and l-cancelling (and then probably just go back to Melee anyway), but the relatively less hardcore fans playing in FG will have to put up with an enormous skill divide that will force them to either spend forever in the training room until they can do both consistently or just stop playing online altogether. There are people who want movement speed to be faster and hitstun to be higher, but there are also people who like moving slowly and doing damage in single hits, and those people will inevitably lose out (not to mention how it'd nerf tank/power characters, who already suck). Smash Bros. is a unique game in that it can be played a number of different ways. As such, it'd attract a lot of people with differing tastes and preferences. And unlike a game developer, who would need to be able to appeal to all of these different demographics, these people generally only care about their style of play.

And this isn't even going into character choice. Everyone has very strong opinions about the roster; who they want in, and who they explicitly do not (I seriously cannot believe that fanfiction.net's mascot is going to be in Super Smash Bros). Many people have at least a few characters that they'd be pissed at if they got in, and even though they'll get over it eventually, it'll still devalue the game and make them even more bitter about the characters they wanted not getting in. That may sound dumb, but I guarantee that most of you feel the same way. For example, here are the characters that I voted for on the ballot:
  • Dr. Eggman
  • Wolf
  • Magnus
  • Raiden
  • Groose
  • Waluigi
  • Genesect
  • Victini
  • Darmanitan
  • Pangoro
  • Diggersby
  • Farfetch'd
  • Zero
  • Tron Bonne
  • Elite Beat Agents
  • Sora
  • Spongebob
  • Darth Vader
  • Funky Kong
  • Travis Touchdown
  • Reckless Safety Notice Man
  • Akuma
  • King Hippo
  • Viewtiful Joe
  • Nightmare
  • Resetti
  • JonTron
  • Home Depot
  • Goku
  • Shrek
  • Sakurai's Cat
I bet at least one of those would make you think less of Sakurai and the franchise if they got in. And the worst part is, compared to the rest of the Smash community, these requests aren't that out there (except for the obvious joke ones). There are people who seriously want everything from Master Chief to Naruto to Freddy Fazbear to Gomez Addams (I've actually heard someone say this). Taking the community's input at face value on this issue will result in a cast that no one likes.

Lets see if I can't address some of the concerns here.

People are acting like what the fans said, the developers MUST do (so "monkey see, monkey do"). That's not at all what I mean (sorry if I didn't make it clearer). Its a act of doing community outreach if anything. Smashers need to have a voice, rather than sit and wait for the game. We shred $60 on Smash 4, then $15 for each Amiibo. Then whatever the petty cost of obtaining DLC content is. That's a hefty $80-85 bucks there.

Something important that came to mind (most notably, as I read the last posters post) was the need to say "no" to the purists. While purists, whether Brawl or Melee, can make a good piece of the pie in terms of sales, they are as much of a parasite as they are a treat. By continuously kneeling to purist demands, you shorten, even choke, the franchises ability to grow, and branch out, become more like a hydra. So, while I certainly understand the conflicts of interest, in the best interest of the Smash franchise, it would be best to say "No" to the purists (you can't always say yes to a consumer).

That's one of the hardest things to do in business. The customer isn't always right.

Its a suggestion box on how to improve Smash (so a certain segment of Sakurai's team, not Sakurai himself mind you, is continuously improving Smash, while the other segment work on other projects).

Its also striving to equalize Smash out for both novices and pros, which should be one of the main goals of the franchise. As the previous post pointed out, wanting to include Spongebob or some other completely irrelevant character to the Nintendo universe isn't just well, stupid, but also counter-productive to the best interest of the franchise. I would think people at the R&D dept would be able to at least separate absurd character requests from realistic and relevant character requests.

Without putting you all to sleep, basically each idea (given its a smart, realistic idea, not just a complaint) is carefully reviewed and compared to where the current installment stands, and how it would benefit the installment if implemented.

Holy moly.

But anyways, no, no one thought you meant the devs have to do what the fans say. What we're saying (or at least what I'm saying) is that fan feedback, unless they actually know what to look for (which most don't) is not worthwhile. Devs already have the tools to get everything they need. There's literally an option that allows Nintendo to monitor your play.

I am going to state some very important points on why Smash will have trouble being community based.
Its demographics: Look, Smash Bros as a fighting game is THE MOST diverse fighting game there is. And its audiences are the most diverse and come from more places than you'd ever find. For one let's start with the two biggest factions: Melee Players (Personally I include Project M players as part of the Melee players) and Smash 4 Players (Most brawl players transitioned over to Smash 4). These two alone are enough of a reason why development cannot be centralized on a fanbase so diverse. One is from a game that is held up as pretty much legendary and has the technicalities to make itself fast as well as an established history that allows for it to exist as its own culture. Then you have the smash 4 fanbase which is very accessible and still trying to establish its own culture and identity. Now just who are the people playing Smash? Now a lot of people got into smash from Brawl, the best selling Smash game to date, and most of them either went off to do other things or stayed apart of its community and culture. Now why are people attracted to smash? Because beating up your favorite nintendo characters mostly, and when you take that into account you are taking into account all the kinds of mini fanbases of each characters people play as. So now you have people coming to play smash for the sake of fighting with link, fox, and all these characters and it just becomes a ridiculously over-diverse fanbase of fanbases that is split into two factions. There is no middle ground. Now let's expand that. There's Japanese smashers which play a distinctly different, more defensive meta and you have English Speaking smashers (usually consisting of USA, Canada and the UK) and a quickly growing region that is the spanish speaking region. Smashers in latin america have also became prominent (just look for yourself at how many mexican players play in online). So with all this in mind you really want to say that they should take part in development? You're really saying this? It's easier to have fans partake in development when you have small franchises such as Guilty Gear, but no way that it would be so easy with a game so monstrously big and divided as Smash 4.

"Maining" 10 different characters is as much of a sin as jokingly asking for any of those characters. Don't act like you're any better. :)

I've never heard of a playstyle being affected merely by the demographic. The diversity of the Smash fanbase reminds me of the political system (at least in the US). I never implied centralizing, caving or catering to any one part of the fanbase. Its taking away the small things people wouldn't really miss (like the bombs falling in Sudden Death matches, and while keeping Ridley as a stage hazard, the ability for Ridley to KO for any one player is disabled).

I would have to see the statistics prior to believing the claim Brawl is the, "best selling game to date," but I certainly wouldn't doubt it.

The thing is Sakurai and his testers design Smash only from their point of view, when more points of views need to be taken into account. I honestly would like to see more comprehensive character and stage testing. Its like they are calling the shots, without addressing needs not seen in their point of view. Its taking a shot in the dark, and assuming you did what was wanted on a global scale.

The growing nationality demographics I don't see playing that big of a role, other than solidifying Smash as a popular game universally. I would be more concerned if Smash were only popular in the Western World.

1.How? Those characters aren't video game characters and aren't nintendo charactes. And going by the way you say that, you act like I main 10 differant characters, when I only main 1 (Kinda 2). I have 5 when you count secondaries and ten if you count semi-secondarys though, If that's what you mean.

Ofc no one actually expects these characters to get in, they just say it because they think they're le epic troll xd of the year. You also proved my point perfectly about maining 10+ characters.

If you could main and fight with each character effectively (or with finesse), you would have the versatility a lot of Smashers only dream of obtaining.

You have incredible taste. I always imagined him as a complex fusion of G&W and WFT.

On topic: No. Never. There are people, right now, posting on this forum, possibly even reading this thread, who wrote ten thousand blog posts, 40 tweets, and an angry letter to Sakurai himself complaining about the inclusion of Dark Pit, while honest to God, unironically wanting another Street Fighter character added even though almost every suggestion is a clone of Ryu (I have actually seen people say Dark Ryu would be cool). Don't even get me started on people who want Shrek, or worse - Krystal. I can only imagine the reactions the developers had to viewing the full, real results of the ballot, and it makes me simultaneously laugh and cringe to even consider the possibilities. It is probably one of the most disgusting jokes ever told.

An interesting paradox comes up when you make a game that has such a large, dedicated fanbase. You want to do things that please that fanbase - you feel almost like you have an obligation to please them, or else they'll leave you. The tragedy is that the most vocal members of that fanbase may as well be yelling to you "inject me with cancer", and you just have to ignore it. Your product is crack cocaine to them, they won't leave you just because their green ogre waifu wasn't included.

As its been pointed out before, the developers of Smash are between a rock and a hard place.

If there's anything Sakurai should learn from Smash 4's development, its practicing better time management (a game like Smash probably requires at LEAST three years of developing prior to releasing the final product. Why do you think Brawl had its merits? The game had gone into production when games were still being made regularly for the Gamecube. Smash 4 should have not been any different. How Krystal would be worse than Shrek is personally beyond me (Krystal has more relevancy to the Nintendo universe than Shrek does, but we'll save that noise for another thread).

We possibly may have never had these clones had Sakurai practiced better time management.

Well it really depends on what these things are. Sakurai as we know wants to keep a balance between competitive and the masses, and the points of views can be convoluted as more factors are taken into account. Either way if you want community input or any of Smash to be "community based" (Sounds very centralized does it?) then it would seem to be much more of an undertaking necessary than what has already been done. Honestly I'd leave things to the developers, they've already done a pretty adequate job of listening to the fans, and I feel the community's inputs can be really biased or not in the interests of the games future sometimes.

Did it really?

Honestly until you've worked on any huge project with a team of people, professional or otherwise, much less a game, you don't really know about the world of time management. To my knowledge, Sakurai has only actually discussed the possible cut of Bowser Jr., right? We don't actually know enough about the production pipeline of the game to make calls like that, or even assumptions, really. Were characters like Lucina and Dark Pit really put in to bolster the roster because time was running out, or were they put in to try and make fans happy? If it was to bolster the roster, why not make all of the Koopalings their own character?

Yes, I am basically playing the "have you ever made a game" card, but it's sort of true.

Something important when it comes to characters is the originality.Other than their physical appearance, the Koopalings would just be taking the role of Bowser Jr. Its important each character have a specific trait to them none of the rest of the roster has, more than just altered appearances.

Don't get me wrong, a good amount of characters in the roster have originality to them, most notably Yoshi and Mr G&W. Originality often is the sole factor between a character being a clone or not.

No, I've never developed a game, but I do have an eye for detail. And being a perfectionist, overseeing every frame and nook I would think would be imperative to making the game of good quality. Not letting a single thing go unnoticed, that's why I've always thought extensive, even exhaustive game testing, would work in Smash's favor, even if people on the team were constantly having to work overtime, and other projects be put to a halt. There's a saying that God is in the details.

And that's pretty much true.

Are you implying that they don't do extensive, even exhaustive game testing?

Also, how are clones bad? Ken is a clone of Ryu yet their play is distinctively different. Hell even Evil Ryu, who is literally Ryu but evil plays noticeably different from regular Ryu. Having every character be unique is nice, but it's not needed for a game so long as the clones are different enough themselves.

No, I'm not impaling that at all. All I know is that it would be a good way to combat bugs down the road, and ensure a smoother, more enjoyable experience (everyone remembers the Bowser glitch last year, right)?

Fair enough, adding clones would not be a practice I would advise (since you can really make Dr. Mario for example, out of attained equipment for Mario). Also, I don't know who this "Ken" or "Evil Ryu" characters are. Alt costumes maybe?

No, I'm not impaling that at all. All I know is that it would be a good way to combat bugs down the road, and ensure a smoother, more enjoyable experience (everyone remembers the Bowser glitch last year, right)?

Fair enough, adding clones would not be a practice I would advise (since you can really make Dr. Mario for example, out of attained equipment for Mario). Also, I don't know who this "Ken" or "Evil Ryu" characters are. Alt costumes maybe?
You don't know Ken from Street Fighter? No they're separate characters who have extremely similar movesets. Despite that, you don't play them the same, things that are safe with Ryu aren't exactly safe with Ken. Mario and Dr. Mario are a pretty good example of this. Although they have extremely similar movesets, because it's literally Mario, you can't play them the same way. Fox Falco is another good example.

Right, so you're implying that they don't already do that? At least not to a level you find as accurate. I'm sorry to say, but that's not possible, Sakurai, and and game dev in general only has so much time and resources to iron out everything. The game has to come out, and making sure each and every little thing runs perfectly is out of the question. Thankfully patches are a thing. The community found a glitch and blew it up, Sakurai's team fixed it. There, you have community interaction.

400+ posts in under a year, ladies and gentlemen.

Don't get me wrong, a good amount of characters in the roster have originality to them, most notably Yoshi and Mr G&W. Originality often is the sole factor between a character being a clone or not.
That's why G&W has Link's dair right? The deciding factor between a character being a clone or not is opinion, whether or not that opinion is informed is another story entirely. I'm not a big Street Fighter man, but I believe the lore is that Ken and Ryu were trained in the same martial arts style. Logically, their moves are similar in execution, but their differences as people brings about their differences in play style. There can be other factors, such as Lucas and Ness probably use different versions of the PSI, or how Pit and Dark Pit use different weapons.

To be brutally honest, the Smash community at large is trash. Listening to us wouldn't be smart... Especially since the majority of Smash's userbase isn't really capable of being vocal in the first place.

Leave it to the experts. And clones are justified no matter how you try and spin it.

I'm starting to get that.

And I'm a regular contributor here, 400+ posts are nothing.
