I think he should be I really want Ice climbers and Olimar to return to SSB4 without being watered down just cause of the 3DS. Plus it give someone more of a reason to buy both Wii U and 3DS versions if they wanted to.

What do you think?

I think they should, but its been confirmed not to happen. It would be awesome if Isaac was on 3ds and shulk was on wii u

I think he's already decided he's not going to have exclusive characters

Sakurai has confirmed that both systems will have the exact same roster so we ain't getting system exclusive characters (stages on the other hand...). And people are over reacting to the 3DS "issues" as we know jack squat on what exactly is an obstacle Sakurai is struggling on. There will be plenty of other things to make the 2 games feel different, just not characters.

I think he's asking if Sakurai should have done character exclusives which my answer will be no to it. It's not really a good idea to screw one userbase over who can't have access to a character who is only available in a version that's available in a different console, especially if that character is the one they really like. It's okay to do it with stages and all but with characters its better to have them all together in both versions.

Well Sakurai said quite some time ago that the 2 games would connect but he then changed his idea. So I wouldn't be very surprised if he changed his idea.

The idea behind exclusive characters have always sickened me, and it would be terrible in a game like Smash Bros. A slightly smaller roster on the 3DS I wouldn't mind, but if the 3DS got characters that the Wii U version didn't get then I would be pretty furious. And about Ice Climbers, they're probably gonna figure out how to integrate them somehow.

Olimar shouldn't be a problem, I'm pretty sure the problem isn't about having too many things on the screen at once, they wouldn't develop a game like Smash Bros which has countless items and characters which makes tons of objects appear on the screen at once if that was a limitation. Plus, Nana is only one character model, no way that's the problem. The problem is most likely getting the Ice Climbers to both react to a single button click and have them synchronize properly too, or something to that extent. Given that the Pikmins are essentially items with an AI, or at least they can be made to be so, it's not gonna be a problem for Olimar.

I was never supportive of version exclusives, especially since I'm not planning to get both. Glad that Sakurai agrees with me.

I'm probably being selfish here, but I think he should've because if Olimar's Pikmin mechanic gets altered in any way then I might lose it.

Speaking of Character exclusiveness, what do you guys think about having a new character designed specifically for Smash? I get that all these characters come from their own line of games, but couldn't Sm4sh have its own character to join the fun?

That's actually why Primid is my most wanted first party, and if Miss Fit wasn't already the WTF character, I'd even support Sandbag :troll:
But seriously, I think that Primids have a lot of moveset potential and being the most common character in the SSE they could represent it. They always seemed like wannabe Smashers to me.

I could definitely see that.

I'm hoping the games are as fleshed out as they can be on their respective systems and will not be held back by something as trivial as 'matching rosters' or something.

That's what I'm so worried about, a watered down version of Ice climbers or Olimar in both the Wii U and 3DS versions.

The two games will connect. He has not changed his mind about that. And there is no way in **** he is going to change his mind about the two games having different rosters. Doing so would just be a slap in the face to people who want version X but character Y. I mean if they put the effort to create a character why would they not put said character in both games?

Would be funny if Sakurai had an exclusive character. If you're fighting the only Ridley online, you know who it is.
If they decide to go with DLC characters after release, it would be awesome if Sakurai played online as the unfinished DLC characters while they were in development. I'm sure that's a huge industry faux pas but I think it'd be great. Can you imagine if you're playing a random match online, and some character who you KNOW isn't in the game shows up and you're like "Oh my god it's Sakurai!"

As far as version exclusives go, if they try and they really really can't get a character to work on one of the systems, then I think it's O.K. to have that character be exclusive to that version(or better yet, have them be watered down, but only in the version where they were problematic). At least that's a legitimate excuse. As long as they're not made exclusive just so they could be exclusive. This is kind of a bad example, but I was annoyed that Soul Caliber 4 had Yoda and Vader version exclusive when there was nothing stopping them from being in both versions(and they later ended up as DLC), but I was fine with Link being Gamecube exclusive for Soul Caliber 4 because there was no way Namco was going to convince Nintendo to let Link be on the other two consoles, so he had to be in either only one version or none of them(and the exclusives for the other consoles had to be put in to balance things out).

If the Ice Climbers/Olimars don't get cut, they will be more than likely a watered down version. Now to what extent we don't know. But we have to realize that up to 4 players could be playing in the 3DS as all Ice Climbers or Olimars and what kind of implications that will have on the system itself.

Here's to hoping they can find a good solution.

Pretty cool but unlikely. The DLC character will first have to exist in the player's data for their game to represent it, in which case if it's DLC, then has anyone really ever been as far as even decided to want to go do already downloaded more like? I am pretty sure if they tried to sneak the unfinished DLC onto the release disk or a patch/another DLC, then a few people would notice or discover it. It's not like we would see him playing on this side of the globe.

Still, if I ran into Sakurai while playing online, I would suddenly lose all the poop in my body.

I'm sure Sakurai would be delighted to hear that his initial design of Ice climbers and Olimar was so spot on that anything else is considered "watered down." That said, whatever issues they are having, I'm sure Sakurai will find a good solution for.

Good ol Sakurai. I'm sure he was spot on the first time. I even think he knew ahead of time and had the 3DS designed to handle 4 ice climbers (and secretly, 5)... but shhh.

Olimar's intial design is pretty much spot on. He can pluck them, chuck them, and whistle them. When attacking with them it's like your minimally controls the Pikmin with the c-stick in the Pikmin games. Anything else would pretty much be a watered down version of Olimar. :S
