Should I change my play style?

I've been playing Melee for a while and have gotten the basics down. (L cancelling, wave dashing, etc). I started to realize though that the way I play makes doing some things a little more difficult. I play with a reverse claw grip style so that I hold the joystick with my thumb and pointer finger. I've found that this can cause a few issues since I don't tend to fully let go of the joystick in time since I'm using two fingers to control it rather than one. I also use the joystick for full hops which I've read isn't the best choice. I still use x for short hops though.

I've tried to change the way I hold my controller and have tried full hopping only with x but it feels very awkward right now. Is it worth continuing to change these habits or will I just be wasting my time? I tried to google it some and have came across some mixed results.

That is honestly the weirdest way I've ever heard of someone holding a controller.

I hold my controller the same way when playing falcon. I feel it gives me more control over the character's movement when I hold it this way

That's why I originally preferred it. But I noticed that I when I'm trying to do this: https://youtu.be/RkUfAtXnNAU?t=1m5s I end up doing a turn around laser because my pointer finger flicks it the opposite direction.
