Should I be using the c-stick? I initially was told by a friend he doesn't feel a need to use it but now I've been hearing I should. Do most people use the c-stick? If i should, what would be the best thing to set it to smashes or tilts?

It really depends or your habit, there are some advance techs that requires C stick. Changing it to Smash or tilts really depends on your own taste, in my experience, tilts don't input well on Smash Wii U, and I kind of dislike how you can hold the C stick to charge your Smash attack.
New 3DS however, the C stick is too stiff to use it like GC's C stick, so I personally don't recommend.

I don't play much smash 4 but in melee I find it makes it easier to use aerials that are the opposite way you are going when using the c-stick. For example falling up smash.

I use the analog stick+A for my smash attacks. So would it be best to set c-stick to tilts if im only going to be use them for aerials? Btw, I just went into training mode and see what people mean and now I get it. I can move in one direction and put out a b-air without losing momentum. Makes sense and I see it as advantageous. My only question now is how to set the c-stick to tilts? Theres no option called "tilt" so what would it be then?

Also to be honest I'm so used to NOT using the c-stick so I'm having trouble getting used to it in my play. Are there any top players who don't use the c-stick or most of them do? And if they do is it for smashes or tilts. Also, I don't understand how the c-stick can be advantageous in any other way besides doing a b-air? Maybe someone can clear this up for me. Like everyone raves you HAVE to use c-stick for Ryu but I'm confused as to why besides not messing up your b-air.

This is coming from someone who uses the Wii U Pro Controller (they ran out of GameCube Adapters when I purchased the game on launch day, so I decided to buy a Pro Controller because it was the next best thing. Believe it or not, I now actually prefer the PC over the GC controller).

Anyways, I set the C-Stick to "Attack" which allows me to use tilts in place of smash attacks. I personally like this a lot as it gives me a very easy and consistent way to do forward tilts (I tend to screw them up doing them with :GCR:+:GCA:). Also, the Smash Attacks of my two mains, Lucas and Shulk, are very situational so, in my case, it's basically giving me an easier and more consistent time accessing three, better moves for them. The C-Stick for the PC is also directly above the ABXY buttons while the GC controller has it a bit below. This means I can use the C-Stick for tilts, but not have to remove it from the same general area as the other buttons, unlike the GC controller.

I'm fine with using :GCR:+:GCA: for tilts. For smash attacks im fine without the c-stick as well. Would you say it's important to still use the c-stick though? Or is it a preference thing. Are there still pro players who don't use the c-stick? And yeah, I would set mine to attack too, considering I perform my smashes with analog+A

It's all about comfort, my man. One could try and argue about optimal button layouts and that claw style is the most effective way to hold your controller, but it all boils down to comfort. You don't use the c-stick when you play? You might want it to do up airs without jumping because of tap jump, or pivot up smash faster, or whatever. But don't use it if you don't want to or don't need it.

No matter you switch to tilts or Smash, the C stick will always do aerials.

Doing Smash with :GCCN:can be more safe than using :GCR:+:GCA: because you can avoid of accidentally do tilts. Back on my 3DS I often did tilts instead of Smash when I tried to punish my opponents, on the other hand, you have to be careful of abusing :GCCN: as smash. Especially when you just got KOed.

Ever since they implemented being able to charge smash attacks with it it's honestly lost some of it's usage for me. Though I've gotten use to simply flicking it in order to do a quick Smash attack when needed.

If you don't use it for Smashes I'd recommend changing it to Attack so you can pull off some AT's easier.

It's really up to preference. Do whatever feels most comfortable to you because, if it feels better, you'll play better.
