I'm super new to SSBM, and have been trying to practice my tech skill a bunch. I'm having trouble consistenly shorthopping, though. Is it really that hard? I can barely tell a difference between when I push x too hard and do a regular jump, compared to when I actually shorthop. Could it be my controller?

it can be hard, depending on the character. just keep on practicing and it'll come to you naturally in time. if you think it's your controller, try jumping with the other button (if you jump with x, try using y) to check if the button is too sensitive or whatever.

Flick the bottom edge of the x button with the right corner of your thumbnail to short hop

Depends on who you are playing as, Fox and Sheik are gonna be harder to shorthop as than C Falcon and Falco. Just takes a lot of practice; maybe go in training mode and just keep trying until you can do it 30 times in a row

I prefer to use the Y button when I jump/ short hop. Try that and see if it is more comfortable for you. Short hopping works like this, the longer you hold the button the higher you will jump.

Pressure isn't a factor here. Imagine gliding your thumb over the jump button. For example, when I Short Hop Double Laser I'm trying to get from point A(Y button) to point B(ironically the B button) as quickly as possible. Practice gliding your thumb over the Y or X button, and once you have the motion down practice in practice mode. Hope this helps!

Each character has a different requirement to do a short hop. With Fox, it takes two frames holding the jump button to short hop. With someone large like Bowser, it takes seven.

Easiest way for a beginner is to take their thumb to the bottom of the button and just kind of lightly slide it off the edge of the button. Eventually, your fingers will move fast enough that you can just press it.
