Hello Smash Community!

Okay so I've been recently trying to get into the competitive smash scene and figured I need to learn the basics. I can DD and wavedash pretty confidently now (wavedash less so) but I'm still too inconsistent with my shorthops. I am currently maining Marth and was wondering if anyone had tips or could tell me how they perfected their shorthopping. I would really like to master this so I could get to work on SHFFL'd Fairs and Nairs so any advice on that too would be welcome. Thanks!

The easiest way I've found is to barely hit the side of the X/Y button (I usually have my thumb right above the X and to the right of Y, barely covering part of the button).

I do that too but I heard somewhere that you shouldn't. I only heard the once so I figured Id continue doing it until I found more evidence.

There's a common misconception that it depends on how lightly you press the jump button. It has to do with the amount of time that it is depressed. It's just something you have to practice over and over again.

I usually only move the tip of my thumb- I press Y while the tip is bend and then I quickly flick it upwards so that my thumb is basically straight.

I also tried the "barely hit the button" method.. however for me it is quite unreliable as you don't really press the button- you rather press the controllers shell.

But I guess the best tip has already been given to you - practice.. you'r thumb will get quick enough eventually

Another kind of sub question: X button V.S. Y button. Are there advantages to one over the other?

I use Y for everything and hold my controller normally. Index fingers on shoulder buttons.

I flick my thumb over x to short hop and use y to wavedash. It's really just about what's comfortable for you.

I just use Y for everything. I also just tap the button directly in the middle to short hop.
