Hey guys,
I just recently got a gamecube years after my old one broke, I used to play melee all the time and was relatively good at it. I'm just coming off a 2 year smash bros. 64 grind so I'm a little rusty on techskill and the like. My short hop with falcon is effective 2/3 times and this is not good as a failed short hop can result in massive punishment. Also, I am still able to stickywalk however I can't manage to do a fluid moonwalk for some reason. I've read the guides and such and I'm playing every day to get better but I seem to be making little progress.

TL:DR Any tips on how to make my short hop/moonwalk more reliable?

You're just going to have to develop muscle memory for pressing the x/y button softer/faster. As for moonwalking, I'd try different hand positions and finger motions. I'm just starting to feel comfortable incorporating the moonwalk into my game, so I still have room for improvement. To moonwalk relatively far like S2j or any of the other amazing Falcons doesn't mean you have move at an insanely fast speed, but sweet spot the motion. Anyways, it's just a matter of time and trying different techniques until you have one that fits you. I can't tell you much more than that. Goodluck!

I've heard a lot of people say to practice in training mode at low speeds and keep moving it up to normal speed? Is that a viable option in regards to practicing my short hop?

Here is how I learn things

I do it then I do it again then again and so on...
just keep doing it over and over and you will get it! Also play at normal speed

Moonwalk is easy. Do perfect waveland moonwalk with Falcon then get back to me. At least that's useful. lol.

Just slam it left or right, drop it all the way down and around to the other side. Just do it fast. Or, if you want to get a real feel for it. Scar's video helped me a lot. Just roll toward the ledge, and keep attempting the moonwalk until you walk off the ledge and gab it. Once you get good, you should be doing a nike swoop esque motion passing the middle, and the very bottom of the directional input. It's kind of in-between those.

You'll get it eventually. And SH just is muscle memory...you can try to press it super fast, super light and quick, or you and quickly 'flick' over it if you like that.

Just practice it between stocks in friendlies, and you'll eventually get it.

I've recently discovered that friendlies are a great way to practice new tactics.

Sure, I lose more friendlies because I screw it up while I'm trying to learn.

But eventually, I learn it.

Learning under pressure is a great way to learn.

I hated practicing something, and then going to a friendly only to lose all the tech skill I thought I had because I was so focused on winning.
