what does shorthop lasering do when you fire someone that's off the ledge over the void? if you do it you can hit them and they have another chance at recovery if they've already tried to recover

edit: sorry, total newb question

Short hop lasering ( SHL) what your saying is true if they can recover and try just leave them but if they are ledge stalling back off and just pressure them to come back on stage or hit them and they might mess up also try to pick what you laser for instance if fox tries to recover just take the ledge thats only if hes further away if fox is close and he tries to recover sometimes a quick laser will cause them to not react and fall to their death in order to do this with all the characters properly I suggest practicing and learning the range of recoveries good luck on your journey with falco. :)

Yes. So in teams, you could laser a teammate (say, Fox) who's already up+b'd and will die offstage without help and they can try to up+b (Fire Fox) again.

Lasers are good at messing with Jigglypuff, Samus, and trying to hit someone out of a midair jump or the startup of a recovery move (Fire Fox, Fire Bird) to decrease their height, but you'd never want to laser a Link or Dr. Mario near the top of their if they are going to fall to their deaths anyway (if they are going to grab ledge and you can hit them you may be able to force them to up+b again so you could look for a dair) - then they get a second chance that you shouldn't give them.

Basically, if someone is in the helpless animation (from airdodging or after using up+b for most characters), putting them in hitstun gets rid of the helpless animation and they can up+b again - that's why if you fsmash [or any other move, like a laser] a character out of their recovery move or while they're falling helplessly, they can try to recover again if they don't die.

Not strictly related, but you could look in a general question forum for future questions instead of a new thread for every question you have, or try looking on Youtube to see about some of this stuff and find some answers. If you want to look for a good Falco, I recommend PPMD or Mango (PPMD may also be called Dr. PP or Dr. PeePee in the video titles/commentary, all the same dude) - just search "SSBM PPMD Falco" or "SSBM Mango Falco" to find footage of these players. Two players called Zhu and Westballz are also pretty good if you want to see a wider variety of players, though PPMD and Mango are the two best Falcos out there right now (I personally think PPMD > Mango, I'm sure others disagree though).

I believe sometimes people abuse the hitstun to cancel recovery up+b's like Marth's Dolphin slash or Samus's up B

Sure they can up+b again but the hitstun will last long enough that they fall far enough down that it won't save them the next time
