Can anyone offer me advice for how to more consistently make my character take short, instead of regular, jumps?

I know that all you technically need to do is press the button lighter than normal, but I cannot reliably get this to work for more than about 1/3 of my attempts. (Having been raised on a NES, I'm not used to varying my button pressure.)

Accualy it doesn't matter how light you press the button, it's all about how quickly you let it go. In order to short hop you have to press the button quickly, not lightly (I made the same mistake when I first tried to learn to short hop consistently) give it some practice and you'll be golden. Try in Training mode until you can do it most of the time, after that you'll get better just by playing and doing it in accual games.

Try practicing with the slower jumpers first. Link jumps really slow :bee:

That's it, that's all you need to know. It's time pressed, not pressure. Just practice and soon it will become second nature.

Right...let's also have a c-button for magical box combos and perfect shine cancels right?

There are 4 c buttons so n00bs can use up C to jump while good players use left C and down C (depending on whether pressing A or B comes next ;) )

Seriously though, it takes no time to master. Just press the button quickly, you'll get it a few times. The next day, you'll get it many times. The next day, you'll get it EVERY time.

When I short hop with the C buttons, instead of pushing down on the center of the button, I like to put my thumb on the edge of the button and just flick it downwards.

Also, in terms of practicing, for whatever reason I think Fox is the best character to learn it with.

Funny story - I used up C exclusively for short hopping for a very, very long time. Long past the point of noobishness. I just never thought that using down C instead would make that much of a difference.

Ahahahahaha how wrong I was. I've only been using down C for about a week now, and I have already seen substantial improvement in my play. It's to the extent that I think that any advice about short hopping should include USE DOWN C in big bold letters somewhere.
