I really didn't want to make a new thread for this, but I didn't see a simple q&a on the falco boards :(

I've recently picked up Falco as my second/alt main, and am very pleased with the ease that he can pull off SHFFLing. I've got his SHL nearly down pat, and can't get enough of that dair :p

The only massive roadblock in my game as of now is my inability to excecute shine combos.. or anything with the shine. I play a bit too aggressive (imo) for a falco, and am very grabby (all those years of marth maining really helped my grabbing skills) in my playstyle. But no matter how hard I try, I can't seem to find a practical use for my shine. I've seen countless youtube videos with falco's shine dominating the field, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to use it right.

Any pointers on getting the shine up to its full potential?

(BTW, I am rather isolated, and can't find anyone close to me to play with. I practice my combos and technique on CPU's, but I know this will hurt me in the long run.)

land a shine any time you can on any one who falls at least as fast as marth. floatier characters you want utilt on many times.

on fox and falco and falcon you can shine -> wd -> more shines or dair->shine or shine->waveland onto platform, depending on %, DI, and stage. you can find those combos done marvelously by players like Shiz and Zhu and DrPP in videos of those matchups.

on characters like Marth and Sheik, you want to go for shine -> FH sourspot dair -> shine or utilt. that's sort of the standard bread and butter from which you work based on the situation you're in.

Shine can kill floaties at low % on stages like PS and YS, but that's highly situational.

Shine comes out absurdly fast when you're in your shield. There is virtually no shield pressure option in the game that can't be countered by an accurate shine OoS.

If you hit a shine while you're in midair, you can DJ out and immediately bair. useful as a kill move when you can't land something better.

Shine is indispensable in shield pressure. It stops enemies from shield grabbing you. You can also multishine to stop grabbing you out of a second aerial, and shinegrab (JC grab while you're in shine) to stuff even more options most characters have OoS.

It's your fastest move, and thus very helpful in a lot of situations where you simply need something out fast: if you're getting tech chased; right after you've side dodged; when you are tech chasing sometimes, etc.

I think that's a decent intro to the shine... if you just can't combo out of it, that's something you have to work on, because getting combos off of shines is pretty much absolutely necessary to win with Falco, since he gets combo'd and gimped so well.

Also alot of people dont know that shine is the best punish for rest, because it always leads into a downair and alot of the times it catches them off guard and you can shine the again and kill them of the top at low percents!

Watching PP, I've noticed that when shield pressuring, if, say, you Dair as falco while your opponent is shielding, and it doesn't contact, the opponent will feel obligated to grab out of shield, at which point PP would Shine before the grab happens. It almost always hits the opponent.
