I saw a few videos where the Falco does a shine cancel off the stage while recovering. Is there any benefit for this, such as stopping the fall for a second giving a bit of extra vertical distance? Or is it just purely for looks?

Its stops the momentum you have from falling so you dont lose as much out of your jump.

hm, yeah there's a few reasons to do this. one that instantly pops into my mind is stalling for the cloud to come out on yoshi's story. shine a few times so you don't just drop, and bam, eventually the cloud MAY come out and you can aim for it. otherswise, it could also throw off an edgegaurder's timing. that's just a few things that come to mind but of course there's other. mainly yeah it stops your momentum and gives you more time to think about how to recover or to stall etc.

edit/ leoneri beat me for first post. THANKS. lol

If you're facing a sheik, she could send fully charged needles into your reflector (if it were at, say, a recovery from her fair) and kill you due to the reflector's lag.

This is useful for both stopping momentum and reflecting "Bullseye KO's".

as stated above it only really helps if you jump out of it imeadiately, as for reflector I geuss you could also reflect another falco's shot making him get interupted but it will cause lag so if your a good distance away it could affect your recovered distance
