I've seen some vids mostly Falco vs Marth where the Falco light shields on the edge and then falls backwards is this just done by holding R lightly and pushing back at the right moment or is it caused when the opponent hits you?

Also is this very useful because I play a Marth and just edgehog and when I get on he always seems to be slower then me so I can roll get on and still have time to foward smash him before he can recover and dodge roll

Yeah this is called the lightshield edgeguard. You pretty much have the idea down, roll all the way to the edge and lightshield and push back in your lightshield. If you perform it correctly you should fall off the stage if the marth hits your shield with his recover and grab the ledge. This is useful if you the marth is trying to sweetspot as you will grab the edge before him and edgehog him. Its also useful even if the marth lands on the stage because of the recovery lag from marth's up b. At this point you can do a ledgehop bair or something to knock the marth off the stage. This is only useful if the marth is beneath you however, and like I said make sure to be pushing back on the control stick or else falco won't fall off. I believe this also works with every character against marth but most people recognize it from PC Chris so they think its a falco only technique....

The way to do the lightshield edgehog easiest is to roll to the edge, during the roll, hold z. tilt the sheild away and down (angle it at the edge). This doesn't work w/ every character, because they need to fall fast enough to catch the edge before marth (fox, falco, falcon, maybe a few others can do it to marth). Marth is not the only one that this can be done to. It works becasue his up-b has only one hit, similar to sheildgrabbing, if you shield the hit, you're invulnerable to the rest of it. This works on everyone whose up-bs are a singe hit only and the hitbox precedes them (marth, luigi, a few others very limited). This also works because traction is greatly reduced while in the lightsheild, and so by tilting it towards the edge, when you get hit, you slide off the edge and grab the edge. make sure not to be holding down/ away while you fall, else you won't grab the edge.

Thanks and ya I see alot of Falco vs Marth vids because I try to learn how to play against my friend so thats why I mention i in the Falco thread. I will probabkly start using this against him if this works against sweetspotting or at least when he won't get the stage because I get him with a dodge roll onto the stage and a foward smash to own him so if this is better plz let me know cause it can be a good alternative.

While i'm not a fan of the light shield edgehog, it does give you options: it beats marth's sweetspot w/ no effort, it he's up-b's prematurely, you can jump out and bair, or, he triggers the shield , you can ledgehop over him and dsmash (or edgewavedash>dsmash)

Sweet so it does beat marth's sweetspot, I assumed that it was really only used against people who miss the sweetspot, definately gonna be using this technique alot more!
