Shield Cancel

This is a very novice question, but what exactly is shield canceling, and how do you do it? I've searched the forums, and I have yet to find a decent explanation.

It's just using your shield to cancel your momentum. Just hit R or L out of a dash and your character should come to a full stop.

People use it because the shield can be brought up and dropped so fast that it saves time to do it that way.

Ahh ok thanks. I guess i knew what it was because I was already doing it, but now I have a name for the technique.
