So I finally got around to picking up a HDTV to play my video games on. I resisted for a long time because of several factors including the fact that I still support the Nintendo Wii and it generally looks and plays better on a Standard Definition set. On top of that my old SD set was a magnificent Panasonic CT-32SX31 flat-screen CRT which admittedly only displayed in 480i but did have a component input for a downright excellent picture even with my Xbox 360. Sadly the old Pany was starting to fail so it was time to upgrade. My new TV is the Sharp Aquos LC-40D68UT which is a 40 inch LCD that displays in 1080p and runs at 60 Hz.

I chose to go with Sharp because their LCD’s are highly regarded in gaming circles for exhibiting very little, if any, input lag. For those of you who may not be familiar, input lag is the phenomenon that presents itself when there’s an appreciable delay between the time you make a motion on your game system’s controller and when the corresponding action occurs on the screen. This is often very noticeable on fast action games like Modern Warfare 2 and Super Street Fighter IV and can often be exponentially worse on Wii titles like Super Smash Bros. Brawl. The Aquos is amazing in that I can get away with playing my Xbox 360 games in Dynamic Mode (all effects turned on) and my Wii is utterly lag free in Game Mode. Nicer still is the fact that the Aquos’ Game Mode still allows the user to make adjustments so my Wii titles needn’t be completely washed out like they are on some other HDTV’s.

Here’s a YouTube video that strongly influenced me to purchase a Sharp and in all honesty I’m very happy I did.

Last but certainly not least, Best Buy had the LC-40D68UT on sale for just $599 and I haggled them down an additional 15 bucks making the Sharp LCD an amazing bargain. :o

In the coming weeks I’ll be posting my impressions so stay tuned but in the mean time here are my initial thoughts.

Pros

Beautiful Hi-Def picture in 1080p!
A plethora of inputs including several HDMI and even 2 components
RCA style (as well as fiber optic) audio output which is really nice for connecting the TV to an older stereo system
Probably the most input lag free HDTV I’ve ever played on
Price!

Cons

Some very slight motion blur
Viewing angle not as good as my older Panasonic 720 LCD TV
No S-Video input
Weak sound from the TV's standard speakers
