I have been practicing since last October and I've gotten pretty consistent with my SHL but my friend gave me his barely used controller to me and I've decided to use that instead of my worn old one. The problem is that I can't do reverse SHL with the controller. Is this just me messing up somehow or do different controllers have different effects sometimes?

I've been playing falco for one year and first two days ago I figured out how to make my shl consistent. Just be more patient with pressing b, it don't have to come out right after the jump. If you're like me then this will help you alot with getting it consistent again.

New controllers respond differently, it's why players often break a new controller in with lots of friendlies or their own personal tricks before using them in tournament.

It's perfectly normal, would you say the control stick on the controller your friend gave you is more springy than your old one?

Yeah, just don't press B too early, and try to break in that controller. I had problems wavedashing and short hopping when I first got my new controller too. It will be fine.
