So I am pretty serious about getting into the tournament sceen. I played melee for a long time before "retiring" and I've played Brawl since launch. Im about to pick up PM to start playing it as well and I'm going to start playing Melee again. I've watched the documentary many times and I've been really active on twitter with tweeting pros, watching twitch plays, MLGs, etc, and come this fall I should be able to start actually doing tournament stuff.

So I just want some general advice and tips from the community. I like in the midwest and read about Big House 4, I'm thinking about making the trip out there to get better smash and meet more people in the community.

How expense do these usual get? What is the environment like? Just general advice and tips from anyone would be greatly appreciate!

First off, welcome to the community!

Big tournaments tend to be pretty expensive (for me atleast) with about $20 venue fees and $10 entry fees, plus gas and/or hotels if it's a two day tourney. Local tournaments are less expensive though, usually $5 venue fee, but free if you bring a setup, and $5-10 entry fees.

The environment is exactly as you'd expect; a bunch of cool people playin smash :) When you go, hop on a set with someone else and play some friendlies. You could instantly make a friend right there, because the community is great. So some of my best friends are people I've met in the smash community, and it's even better because you can play smash with them every time you see them!
Not sure how skilled you are, but the competitive play in this game is quite a step up from casual play, so you'll most likely lose at your first tourney. (EVERYONE does) Just be mentally prepared for that.

Just be nice, have fun, be a good sport, and you'll love it, trust me.

And if you end up going to the Big House 4 I'll look for your tag and hopefully play some matches with you. :D

I really hope I can get out there! I want to be a part of the competitive scene and if I can't make TBH4, i'll try to attend something else as soon as I am able. Im getting married in August, and then we are attempting to move, and my youtube/fb page got a lot more local hype than we anticipated so we've been getting invitations to local cons so there is a lot going down for Sept and Oct! I really want to go though and I will certainly try to, but if not I will get to another tournament as soon as I can afford it and if there is a TBH5 I will make sure I get to that one!

Its really difficult to judge skill level via text, but I do have some vids online, and I stream PM sometimes on my twitch page. Granted I am brand new to PM. But you're welcome to check it out if you like!
