Selecting Characters in All-Star VS

In all-star versus, how do I choose a character for each stock? It works on random, but when I choose a character I'm the same character for the whole match.

i also had this question. its a bit confusing, can someone clear it up?

It seems like you just select a character then deselect them, then select the next one, deselect again, and select the next one etc. But it still works kinda funny, so some clarification would be nice

You select your first character as your first stock, then you deselect your character and pick another one as your second stock.
