secret character theory?

from the Super smash bros to super smash bros melee, captain falcon and ness became starter characters for no reason. Ness was a very hard character to unlock in SSB so why was he turned into a starter? It does not make much sense however, neither ness nor captain falcon have been announced yet. This makes me think, what if he changed it so that Ness and Captain Falcon are back to being unlockable. Currently there are 20 starting confirmed characters (excluding Zamus because she is a transformation and Snake and Sonic because they are confirmed unlockables). I believe Sakurai is not announcing unlockable characters until Brawl is out in Japan, therefore it is possible that the unlockable characters will not become starters and will stay unlockable along with ness and captain falcon.

1) He's probably announcing unlockables now...I doubt we get all 3 kirby characters from the start...and definetly not Sonic or Snake.

Yeah we're definatly not getting all 3 kirby representives only meta and kirby will start in my opinion if I'm wrong about meta starting then he'll just be one of the first and easiest to unlock but as for your thoery Sakurai is announcing unlockable characters(sonic,snake,de de de,diddy,lucas) and others cuz I can gurantee they ain't going to start.

*sigh* They are announcing secret characters. Sakurai said somewhere that he thought that the 3rd party characters should be secret characters to make them feel more special. The reason they made Ness a starter was that they wanted to make Mr. Saturn an item and if he was an item this would give away his secret status, so making him a secret character would be pointless. I think the main reason that Captain Falcon was a starter was that they wanted to include his level in Adventure Mode.

If you didn't notice, Captain Falcon and Ness were the sole (and main) representatives of their series in the original game. Earthbound and F-Zero were exclusively represented by secret characters, whereas Mario and Pokemon (where the other two characters are from) had both default and secret character representation. CF and Ness were likely given starting positions in Melee because of this (which is also why I think Mr. G&W and Marth will become starters).

There's no specific NEED to make Marth a starter, as there's already Ike on the starting roster. Same with Ness.

I never said that it was necessary; it would be appropriate, though, seeing as how FE's getting default character representation with Ike. As Marth is the face of FE, it only makes sense that he should be given a starring role. And since Ness is both likely more recognizable than Lucas and already a starting character, there's no specific reason for him to be made unlockable once again.
