SDI?

I'm seeking to improve my game here in ssb4, and have seen many techniques to do so. But one that has continuosly eluded me is SDI. Can anyone explain to me what it is and how it works? And if possible, any useful methods to perform it?

SDI is basically tapping the control stick in a direction to get out certain moves, usually multihit moves.

However, it's worth noting that in Smash 4, it is SEVERELY weaker compared to previous games. You can still do it but more often than not, it won't do much.
