Screw Attack Glitch ?

I was playing a few matches with my brother, and he was using pokemon trainer, and I was using samus. Neither of us really use those characters when we play seriously, so we were just screwing around and having fun. Something really weird happened though. He maybe had around 50% damage and I had knocked him off the course. He grabbed onto the edge and I was waiting for him to come up when I accidentally used a screw attack right next the the ledge. The weird thing was it hit him and actually sent him flying into the bottom corner of the screen. He was sent so far he couldn't recover and we both just sat there with our mouths hanging open. Does anyone know how this happened ???

The same thing was in melee. The screw attack has a hitbox to the left and right of samus on the ground. You will notice in the initial frame that there is a sort of shock wave that radiates away from her right before she shoots into the air. This is basically what hits the opponent if the are on the edge.

I'm ashamed of myself, being a Samus user and not knowing this, not even in melee! That would've screwed around with people who succeeded in grabbing the ledge... D:
