IGNORE THE VOTE, THATS A REALLY BAD IDEA NOW THAT IVE THOUGHT ABOUT IT...

Hello smashboards TOs and others who could give some advice,
I have been in the competitive scene for 2 years. Yes, I am also the guy that makes controllers (http://smashboards.com/threads/custom-gamecube-controllers.331764/page-15#post-17681143) is a way many of you are familiar with me. I am planning on running a monthly tourney series with power rankings in place for a new Smash club I am starting at my school.

Here are the specs of a Melee tourney I plan to run, I would like some feedback and recommendations as far as time. Keep in mind rules are purposely simplified to what I feel like would be the best way to simplify the tournament (for new players) so please include your feedback on these if you have suggestions:
  • Setup at 2:05 (school ends then), friendlies until 2:20 (then first round winners begins), latest for ppl to show-up 2:30
  • 20-30 people at each tourney expected, so I plan to run a 32 man bracket.
  • Double elimination
  • Bo1
  • Semis and GF Bo3
  • 4-stock, no items, 5 min timer (I know its shorter, that is because some people like to take forever and we don't have time)
  • Legal Stages set to random (for simplicity), or by agreement on any legal stage (again, for simplicity)
  • 5-6 TVs, so a possible 5-6 Setups (or 2-3 per game if two tourneys running simultaneously)
  • Index Cards to indicate matches
  • I run bracket along with a helper (how many helpers would I need for a 32 man bracket, I am not competing)
Any recommendations, advice, need to knows for an event like this, please let me know. I would like to finish tournament(s) by 4:00 (start at 2:30). Is this possible? How long would a 32-man bracket like this take? Thanks!

Hello GameCubeScrubb,

You asked how the tourney at my school went in another thread, and I'd have to say it went pretty well. There didn't seem to be any problems with timing, and we had enough setups (8) for everyone (About 26 participants)

To organize things better, we had a pre-registration process, and I sent out a google form to all the club members, setting a deadline to register (3 days before the tourney), so we could set up the bracket beforehand, based on my TO Committee's knowledge of the players' skill level. The seeding was a bit inaccurate this time (it was our first tourney), since we didn't know many of the participants, but going forward we're using Glicko, an elo rating system to seed future tourneys.

We were able to actually setup in the morning, so setups were tested and made sure to be working before the actual tourney.

Before the tourney started, we briefly went over how the bracket would work (we did DE) and the specific ruleset we were going to be using, just to be sure everyone was on board. Additionally, our school didn't allow cash prizes so we didn't have to worry about that. For the ruleset you're going to be using, just be sure that

In the back of the room, we had two laptops dedicated to reporting scores after matches were done (we used Challonge for our brackets), and the participants would come over after the match and report to me/my friend about who won.

A great tool I really think helped call matches (if you're using Challonge) is Challonge Match Display. We were able to project this on the projector in the classroom, so that everyone could see it. We did label each station a number 1-8, and the program really assisted in keeping things moving in an efficient manner.

I hope this helps, and hopefully your tourney is successful. I agree with having at least a few people to help out with running the tourney, because you can't do everything by yourself.

Good luck!

P.S. I can't post links yet since I haven't posted much on my account, but you can find the links to the programs mentioned above (Glicko, Challonge Match Display) under Forums > Tournament Discussion > Useful Tournament Organization Applications

Just a thought but instead of having two tournaments why not do a weekly thing with two separate teams. Red VS Blue, East VS West? That way you wouldn't have to juggle two tournaments all the time cause I feel like that would be get very taxing.

The way I see it, if so and so comes in after school and he is on the East side, he would play against fellow east players that come in, that way you can start getting regulars to come in and wouldn't have to worry about a lot of people coming in all the time to do tournaments. if you have a slow turn around one week it won't be a trouble at all. I watch a lot of basketball so I get the idea from that.

What I would do is set up a sign up sheet, see who is coming the first time, then split them up from group a and group b. Each play each other for a specific amount of games, maybe that day since you have 5-6 set ups just mash out games between players. People in the groups could cheer on their fellow teammates, and it could build a pretty awesome connection between theg roups. Then after a few weeks, the top 8 people from each group go into the tournament. Just giving you a blueprint, in the nba, teams play 72 games before the playoffs (tournament) begin. East still play against East but the Grand Finals is East VS West, the best of the best from each group, so not only are they playing to be the best player, they are representing their group. There is a lot of pride in that, well I think so. And it could be a very fun experience for everyone.

Then again, you don't have to listen to me, this is just all an idea that I am having as I type this out >_<"

How long do you have to run these tournaments? Best of luck to you with everything.

I honestly like this idea, but my take on it is that it excludes people who aren't as good. Obviously, you aren't going to get far in the tourney if you are the club kirby scrub, but atleast you can participate in the same tournament that the 20XX fox master competes. Thats what I think makes smash tournaments so cool, is that you get that diversity of players and personalities instead of just the best.

I appreciate your input anyways, very cool idea. I have about 2-3 hours to run a tournament. Please let me know if you guys have any other suggestions, we had our first meeting today and there is already 30 people in the club!
