Smash 3DS Save data system transfer?

Hi there.

So I bought a 3DS XL with a 4gb SD card and a physical copy of SSB4 the day it came out in Australia, I've unlocked a crap tonne of stuff and put hundreds of hours into the game, but I want to upgrade my system to the New 3DS XL. The question is though, is it possible to transfer all my save data to the new system? If so, how does this work and what are the catches? If not, is there any way to avoid starting from scratch?

I'm pretty sure save data always stays on the physical copy.

If you had downloaded it, that would've been more problematic.
