Sakurai is Recorded by Camera While he Works, Doesn’t Like it

As you're all almost certainly aware, Masahiro Sakurai's currently working incredibly hard creating Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS. But what you might not know is that apparently Nintendo records a lot of that work, and, as one might expect, Sakurai doesn't enjoy that too much.
According to his column in Weekly Famitsu, there's a video camera present pretty much any time Sakurai talks about what needs editing or changing, keeping an "accurate recording" of his statements which might otherwise become skewed or misinterpreted. However, Sakurai says "it doesn't feel very good," exemplifying his discomfort by describing the way "most people don't really like listening to [a recording of] their own voice."
"It remains as an accurate recording. The people under supervision can check over and pick up things that would become blurred in something like a written memo.

Everything I say or talk about is recorded as is, but to be honest, it doesn't feel very good. You know how most people don't really like listening to [a recording of] their own voice?" — Masahiro Sakurai

Apparently, Sakurai is recording himself to make sure the things he wants done get done.

Shows some dedication, especially since he doesn't like it.

Ofcoarse he does not like it hes trying to keep as many secrets as possible
It doesn't really have anything to do with secrets, though. It seems to only be used by himself and the development team to keep track of everything he says more accurately.

Speaking of dedication...

Full article in spoiler tag:

I don't care what Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai does so long as he makes the next Smash Bros. Apparently, Nintendo seems to share that sentiment. But Sakurai is a man of values and does not abuse the trust that has been placed on his shoulders.

Sakurai's arm still has not healed, but that isn't stopping the man from overseeing the development of the upcoming Smash Bros. games for the Wii U and 3DS. In his bi-weekly column in Weekly Famitsu, Sakurai wrote about his daily life as a game director.

While Sakurai does live within walking distance from the development office at Namco Bandai headquarters, he is apparently not required to come in to work every day. In fact, Sakurai writes, "My office hours are up to me. So long as I complete the new Smash Bros., I could show up only once a week, or only at night, or even telecommute if I wanted to." It's good to be the boss.

But just because he can doesn't mean he does. Apparently Sakurai still shows up for work at 10AM every day along with other members of the team. Nothing goes into Smash Bros. without his approval and Sakurai takes his job as game director seriously. Writes Sakurai, "It's just as important to check the specifications behind the development of things like graphics, sound, motions, characters, stages, game modes, and UI, not just the products themselves."

Sakurai is probably going in to work at 10AM again tomorrow, even though he doesn't have to. Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Smash Bros for Wii U are scheduled for release next year, and you can tell he's going to do everything in his power to make sure they come out. It's reassuring to know a guy with such a work ethic is at the helm. I just hope his arm gets better quickly.

Would be cool with some "Behind the scenes" footage eventually, though I doubt it'll ever happen. Of course we'd need someone to sub it too.

Also, gotta love the dedication he puts into it.

I can't say I blame him. I personally hate seeing pictures and videos of myself. However, this is actually a smart move on his part. If he mentions something that he needs balancing in the video, then he will get the balance that he wants rather than have someone misinterpret what he says and we could get some major unbalance.

Well, I guess this means that Sakurai won't do a Let's Play of his own games. Hahaha.

This would be a problem because I can hell see Sakurai saying something that some "fans" will bash him on in the future. Going into work and being recorded would just make you feel awkward as hell and you couldn't even work in a comfortable manner.

I'm confused as to WHY he's being recorded...

It's HIS work, so Nintendo (or anyone else for that matter) shouldn't be sticking their noses where it doesn't belong.

He's recording himself so that his team knows exactly what they're supposed to do.

Nintendo has no part in it.

Seems natural. Speaking can be a little awkward for some people when they know they're going on record, and in general listening to your own voice played back to you can be a little weird (you usually sound a lot different than you think).

I really appreciate the work he's putting into this, though, and I'm happy to learn what's going on behind the scenes every now and then.

Really? I think in these creative fields tape recording isn't necessary. I'm a video editor, and I'm never recorded. It gives me a sense that I have some freedom without being watched all the time. I personally make something, watch it and decided I don't like it and start over. Rinse and repeat. If someone were to watch me do that 5 times, they might think I'm wasting everyone's time. But I always get something I'm happy with and get the job done on time. I think that Sakurai is a big boy in his field and supervision should be kept minimal.

There are multiple cameras at all time on me at work. So sophisticated they could zoom into the fact of a penny

Oh, come now, surely the guy who's self-centered enough to claim Smash Bros. games would fail without his "personal criteria" can stomach listening to recordings of his own voice?

Digging up the quote, he didn't say fail, per se, but he claimed that the game wouldn't be as successful if anyone else were in charge. I'm sure a lot of people actually believe that, too.
You might want to read the actual article they got this from...

http://www.nowgamer.com/news/features/2034386/super_smash_bros_sakurai_speaks.html

Sakurai said:
"Whether I’m working on Kid Icarus, whether I’m working on Smash, whether I’m working on a Kirby game, or any game at all regardless of how my staff is put together, the structure of the organisation or the timing," Smash Bros creator Masahiro Sakurai explains to us in a hidden during E3. "Those can all change completely, but for me, my feeling of wanting to create the best possible game that we can create using the materials that we have at hand, that’s never changed and it never will."
I fail to see how wanting to make the best game possible that both himself and the fans will enjoy is being self-centered.

Well, that's a great goal and all, but I'd be surprised if it weren't at least one of the goals of most developers. What's off-putting to me is that Sakurai considers it impossible to make 'the best game possible' unless he himself is pulling the strings. You know, never mind the many, many team members who put in work behind the scenes and don't receive a fraction of the praise or gaming media glorification, and never mind that most competent developers could take as strong a concept as Smash Bros. and create equally successful games for the series if nepotism granted them five chances over more than a decade to fine tune "personal criteria" of their own.

I never really intended to debate Sakurai's personality when I posted that throwaway jab, but I feel it's as good an opportunity as any to repeat my stance that, while he is a great developer, he's far from flawless, and probably not as great as he thinks he is.
