ryu and mario similarities

They are both the main characters of their fighting games. They are both all rounders and good beginner characters. They both rely on fireball and a aierial upwards punch

In fighting games, you'll have the typical "shoto" character. Basically like you said, well rounded characters that are helpful for beginners. Pretty much almost every main character in a fighting game will have this fighting style since it's sort of tradition.

I consider Luigi as the Dan (from SF) of Smash. Every game needs a wonky, weird character that may or may not have been intended as a joke.

If i remember correctly, When Smash was first developed, SF the domiant fighting game, they wanted to make Mario the Ryu of smash. Hence his fireball, DP, and tatsu (hurricane kick).
I think Luigi was intented to be more like Ken. Stronger DP then Mario, but weaker fireball game, but as of more recent games, Luigi seems more like Dan to me haah.
