Recently, a few new images have been floating around the web, notably this one:

According to this piece of paper, it says that Super Smash Bros. Brawl will have 48 characters. This piece of paper also claims that (roughly translated), “This time, model change character will also be characters.” This could refer to either clones or simply costumes, depending on whether it means moveset changes are included in the game. However, this piece of paper is… just a piece of paper. A piece of paper with Japanese writing printed on it using the default Windows font for Japanese. This is not an official publication for anything, unless it has been proven elsewhere, and until then, we can assume that someone who knew Japanese decided to pull a fast one, knowing that people would take what they can’t understand as truth, regardless of the source. Sorry guys, but it’s highly unlikely that this one is genuine.

However, we have gotten some interesting (and authentic) photos in the Famitsu Information Booklet.

Front cover

Legal jargon on the back

More legal jargon

The copyrights give credit to a few notable non-Nintendo (or SEGA or Konami) companies, such as Rare and NAMCO. Many believed that this meant that a few of their characters were present and revealed in the booklet. However, it is important to keep in mind that included with the character biographies in the booklet are character histories. Link’s history, for example, includes a photo of him as a cameo in the GameCube version of Soul Calibur 2. Opposing him is the character, Necrid. Also, in Diddy Kong’s history, there is a portion honoring Diddy Kong Racing for the Nintendo 64, of which includes the character Banjo, from Banjo-Kazooie, a Rare title (Diddy Kong Racing itself was also developed by Rare). The rest of the companies likely follow suit.

For those who got their hopes up about these rumors, notably the first one, please understand that what you find is likely not going to be genuine, especially as the game’s release draws nearer. More and more people are going to hop on the hype bandwagon and find a goldmine of gullible speculators out there to fool. The game is going to be released in Japan in less than 2 weeks, so it wouldn’t hurt to be a bit skeptical about what you find until then.

Thanks to SamuraiPanda for all translations.
