the same roster has cost:

-ice climbers even though there done on wii u
- no more transformation characters
- no more pokemon trainer rip ivysaur and squirtle
- no unique out of the box moveset the 3ds can not handle

if they were dead set on making the same roster, the movesets should not have been the same

No more transformations is a good thing in my opinion, even if it cost us Ivysaur and Squirtle.

This game has more unique movesets for newcomers than any past installments (arguably only challenged by Snake, Pokémon Trainer, ICs and Olimar.)

The Ice Climbers thing is admittedly pretty bull****, even if I'm happy they're gone I don't necessarily agree with the reason for their removal, but it is what it is.

My only worry with the existence of a 3DS version is that the Wii U version will suffer from the same kind of stage selection due to the time spend designing new stages has to be split on both versions.

The other thing Sakurai said about Ice climbers was that they weren't a high enough priority which means he likely didn't think they were worth the effort of trying to get them to work on the 3DS.

Transformation characters being gone has nothing to do with the 3DS. It was done so they could balance the characters better. Just about everyone only played one of the transformations anyway.

I hated Pokemon trainer actually. They could have added ivysaur or squirtle but they decided not to. Once again not the fault of the 3DS.

No character is ever going to have a moveset that pushes a console to it's limits. That would be ridiculous. Especially if there were four on the field at once.

It seems I am definitely in the minority when it comes to the subject of Ice Climbers and their demise

I know that there was a bunch of very loyal IC mains and fans who are crushed that their favorites were cut....and that is a total bummer, however I personally never cared for them and their play style just did not mesh with my own lol. Still have to respect them lol

It's fine. Removing the ICs and separating transformations has been good for game balance. I'm all for bringing Popo back and making Nana a clone (and, imagine this, making them standalone viable characters), but in this case I am going to call these limitations a good thing.
