Role of custom equipment in game progression

Hey all,

I want to hear your opinions of custom equipment not in the competitive scene, not in matches with friends, but in game progression. On of my favorite things about smash 4 is the wide array of challenges, and how even for a smash veteran like myself, many of these challenges are HARD.

So here's the story; I beat all of the solo events and their rewards on hard, and my friend and I beat all of the group events and rewards on hard, all without custom equipment... except for one: the "Real Final Battle", where you have to beat all 50 enemies in a row on hard for reward. So for the first time, we used custom equipment, including vampire / auto-heal items.

Let's just say, it was VERY anticlimactic. We beat the hard difficulty with 0% damage. I probably could have done it alone with those customs! It was not satisfying to beat at all. I understand newer players might have trouble without them, but that's what easy difficulty is for, right?

A similar situation emerges with classic mode, but at least Sakurai gives us the "Clear classic on 9.0 without custom equipment" challenge. Custom equipment isn't just a crutch; it fundamentally changes the game, especially against CPUs. Sakurai probably expects us to use it. But strange effects like healing off damage or becoming universally stronger just aren't the same to a silly old player like me.

...
TL:DR
I don't have a problem with customs existing. But I'm curious to how others feel about completing in-game challenges with custom equipment. To me, it cheapens victory because the benefits outweigh the trade-offs in all situations.
