Smash 3DS Rival Smash Challenge

There is a challenge regarding the rival smash. The challenge states "Get 50 or more KOs in a single Rival Smash"
I've clocked in at 58 KOs, but it doesn't seem to count towards the challenge. Now, I'm assuming it means 50 KO MORE THAN YOUR RIVAL. But because it doesn't say anything like that, I'm wondering if this is just a glitch rather than poor communication on the challenge's part.

After you die, your rival's kills subtracts yours. So if your rival had 9 or more k.o's, then that would put you down to 49. At least I think how that works.

That's the final score, yes. But I feel like it should be more specific. I spent a long time trying to get up to 50 only to have the rules changed on me like that. I'm just butt hurt and I guess I'm passing off the message before people start assuming it's a simple "Get 50 KOs" like it says.
