In all honesty, I'm somewhat tired of ranting and raving about games that I dislike or hate, so I decided that it was time to write about a game that I actually liked. Kingdom Hearts was an action RPG released on the PlayStation 2 way back in 2002. The game was a crossover between Disney and Square, a crossover even stranger than the Archie-Punisher crossover, maybe.

I'll start with the story seeing how this is an RPG and that's usually the most important part. So, we have this kid named Sora who wants to become an astronaut and explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no one has gone before. Oh wait, wrong series. What he really want to do is explore worlds along with his friends Riku and Kairi. And in order to accomplish this task Sora and friends have built (and I kid you not) a raft. That's right, they build a raft to go and explore other worlds. I guess this is what happens when you have a lack of meat in your diet. And because this is a JRPG that means that something really bad is going to happen before the spunky young heroes in odd-looking clothes can do anything. So then a giant void of evil stuff pops up, starts sucking up Sora's island, he gets a giant key to swing around, eventually meets up with Donald and Goofy and goes on semi-episotic adventures in various Disney themed worlds. All leading up to Sora, Donald and Goofy beating up an evil guy who had no previous mention or relevance to the plot, and is only evil because someone has to be. It kind of reminds me of those short anime series that use the "monster of the week" formula, only to have a small continuing plot near the end in which the heroes must confront a villain who had nothing to do with the plot before hand. It isn't the best plot, but it's made up for by having great execution. During the cinematics and such you probably won't even notice how illogical the story is because the dialog just has this charm to it that causes you to completely forget the fact that you're basically playing a fanfic! And I'm more than sure that all of the Final Fantasy and Disney character cameos also serve as a great distraction. It's like you're eating a cake with the tastiest and most enjoyable frosting in the world, only to realize, hours after you've eaten it, that the actual cake was made out of mud.

The gameplay is overall pretty good, a little ruff around the edges but still overall good. What Kingdom Hearts is, is a button masher. The heartless (oh, forgot to mention that the bad guys are called that) are more than eager to try and rip Sora's legs off so they appear every other step. And then you're going to have to battle, which usually doesn't consist of much more than "hit the X button a lot, run around a bit in order to get close to whatever you're going to hit, and if you're low on health use cure." And there's another problem I had with this game, they load you down with a ton of spells and most people are only going to use Cure. And Tinker Bell if you're smart. It also doesn't help that your control over the camera is minimal, because there are times that you'll be in a weird place and the camera will get stuck behind something. Although I'll admit that that's is on the rare side. And the game's currency is near useless, you're only going to use it if you're going to buy potions and such from shops but that really doesn't make much of a difference seeing how baddies drop them every other kill. Oh, and cinematics are unskipable, meaning that you have to watch the same three minuets of dialog every time a boss kills you with your own balls.

Even with all of the **** that I'm giving it, Kingdom Hearts is a really enjoyable game. The battle system is surprisingly fun, it's one of the few games to have a good targeting system, and the amusing dialog and charm makes up for the fact that the story is mostly crap. But I'm just really nit-picking this thing to death. If you haven't already, go pick up this game up. Even with all of the flaws that I pointed out and furiously nitpicked, it's still a load of fun that's worth at least one play through.

Heh, you make the game sound weird, oh ya it is. All the flaws you say are true, but the presentation and charm more than make up for it. Lol, I remember your huge health bar going down half way when you get hit once.

I just got this game around Christmas, after putting it off for a while. And it was really good. I didn't quite finish it before the semester kicked in, and haven't gotten back to it, but I definitely want to finish it when summer hits.

Heh, I actually assumed this would be a bash review.

You've said all the right things, except the only real flaw I've noticed was the lack of an actually target audience for the game, which is more an indirect flaw. Sure, people love Final Fantasy, and hate Disney. Luckier for me, I like them both, though I was still pessimistic when it was announced. It worked well in the end, and from that date, Kingdom Hearts will always be a great series, in my opinion or not.

Excellent game. I love both Final Fantasy and Disney so when announced I went nuts haha. I loved the "monster of the week" analogy- that sums it up lol. But al in all, this game was executed perfectly. I felt that the flaws were all patched up in KH: 2- making it even better than the first game IMO.

Overall rating I'd give it: 9/10 (srsly)

I like some Disney and hate Final Fantasy. Short research led me to believe that it contained more Final Fantasy than Disney, so I gave it the finger and decided never to play it. I have no desire to sit through the same dull plot that gets regurgitated onto my face in every JRPG once again, even if it does have Donald Duck in it.

I wish I could say that your reviews have convinced me to give it another chance, but glowing reviews on the internet have yet to prove themselves indicative of any type of quality in anything.

I'd hate to shine on your parade, but Kingdom Hearts has a lot more Disney than Final Fantasy. They have Disney worlds, Disney characters, and just the essence and atmosphere of Disney. Kingdom Hearts only has few FF characters and references. Don't knock it until you try it. If you don't like FF, then at least enjoy what is Disney of it.

I'm here to also share in the bubble bursting. I have a friend who has an intense burning hatred of Final Fantasy, and yet loved this game. It's roughly 98% Disney, and the only 2% of Final Fantasy is at the start, a little bit in the middle, and it's around near the end. That's the end of it, all the Final Fantasy characters really do is just kind of make cameos. So seriously give this game a shot some time, it might surprise you.

And build a huge gummi ship and blow up legos and stuff.
I just noticed this post, and I remembered about the whole Gummi Ship system. It was really fun in both games, but was only semi-important. Regardless, you should've at least included a nod to it in your review, Finalark. But, it can't be helped. Wasn't anything more than a FPS side-quest in my eyes, anyway.

So I decided to give you guys the benefit of the doubt, and I played this game today. I log my thoughts herein:

I don't know what you meant by the battle system being fun, because it has been everything but enjoyable so far. In fact, I'd even be willing to sit through the infuriatingly uninteresting main character because what I've seen of the Disney side has been promising so far, but taking two minutes to mash the attack button at a group of Heartless every five God**** steps is seriously riding on my nerves. It's got that "single-player MMORPG" vibe. Maybe it suddenly becomes fun in the next world or whatever, but I've been playing it for two hours now, and if it hasn't gotten better since then...

I had hoped that the inclusion of a jump button entailed some enjoyable platforming action, which seems to be at least partially true, although the majority of it was contained in the bit where I restarted the race at the beginning four or five times because I wanted to name the raft "Dickbarge" and Riku kept freaking cheating. And then the raft was destroyed, so it doesn't matter anyway! Some of the stuff in Traverse Town has been promising, though.

**** the camera. It's caused me to take hits I shouldn't have more than once.

The atmosphere--at least on the Disney side--has been the most enjoyable thing so far. That enormous door with the entrance that was actually a small door inside it, the ship falling through a tunnel instead of launching, the caution signs with the hands waving out; I've been hanging on to the game in the hopes that there's an abundance of stuff like that in the future. The story, on the other hand, is entirely uninteresting, and I know that the game is going to continue to try and make me care about Sora and company with unskippable cutscenes.

My conclusion: Maybe there's something to it. It's teasing me with an enjoyable atmosphere that it refuses to allow me to play in yet, like a news station which advertises one interesting story but makes you sit through the entire rest of the program first to see it. But I'm having a hard time finding the merit of forcing myself through the chore of the gameplay for what might be a redeeming atmosphere later, when I could, say, just watch a good Disney movie instead of trying to appease a game so it will give me portions of one. I might give it another shot in the future, but right now I can't bring myself to continue.
I'd also like to mention that I'm not trying to dislike the game. I'm honestly giving it as fair a chance as I give.

I thought early on the game was ******** too, not gonna lie.

I think it just comes down to the fact that his abilities make him move around a lot smoother in combat, and you have a bit more options. You can just get through it pressing the x button and the occasional cure but that's no fun.

I'd give it a 7 or 8/10, Aside from Sora and Yuffie who annoyed my nuts off, I found the plot to be entertaining, but good lord that camera. **** that camera.

Getting KH2 soon when school ends, that one looks promising.

@Bobson: The game does start out as crap. I hate to say this about anything, but it's one of those "give it time" games. And plus the plot does suck, the only thing that kept me going wast he Disney atmosphere.

Oh yeah, a note on that-How long did you do 'research'? Wherever you got that idea is full of lies, there's barely any FF really. Cloud's role is next to nothing, Leon, Yuffie, Cid and Aerith are only there to give you some lines about where to go and then do absolutely nothing, and Moogles run a shop.

The rest is all disney.

The Kingdom Hearts series really needs to stop answering questions with 3 other questions. Good games other than that though. :x

Also, if you take out all of the Final Fantasy characters, the story probably wouldn't change a bit.

Ya, but these next 2 games shouldn`t hurt ;)
It is super enjoyable anyway,
like the mysteriousness of Chain of Memories,
I love that game,
so I am sure these next ones will be great.

I think if KH had less or no FF characters and more original ones it would be better.

But that's just me.

Hey, without spoiling anything, does KH2 have any room for a sequel?

Yeah. The ending brought more questions than it actually answered. They have to make 3 games to clean up the mess they made, lol.

That s what makes people look forward to the other games. Kingdom Hearts is the only gaming series I've played where there is much suspense even after completing the game. Not knowing is half the fun, in my opinion.

Yesh it is. I wish the wait for the new games wasn`t so long.
It was terrible seeing the deep dive video for KH2
like 3 years before it came out.

Hm, that get's me kinda excited for KH2 then lol.

Also, if you have an Ecks Bawks, try Assassin's Creed, the ending left some questions and I'd say quite a bit of suspense.

I'm just here to cosign on some of the stuff that's already been said. I LOVE Disney (and I'm talking about the good Disney with the princesses and stuff, not all that new school Miley Syrus/Jonas Brothers garbage they promote these days) and I'm also a big fan of FF. If you love Disney, you're good, lol. KH2 has funner gameplay than KH1, and they have a reaction system which tries to take out some of the boring button mashing X (though the game is too easy anyway, so it doesn't really matter). However KH2 really let's Sora obtain godlike power, so the sheer **** you do is amazingly fun. Furthermore, some of the stuff you get to do is just stupidly awesome (trying not to be a spoiler here) so it's the best.

Both of the games have REALLY annoying openings, but I promise it gets better.

Also, try and play Chain of Memories between 1 and 2. I was hyped for KH when it first came out, even though everyone else was skeptical about crossing FF with Disney (which was really an awesome idea) and then everyone loved it, and I didn't get to play it forever (until last Summer actually) because I didn't own a PS2 (borrowed a friend's.)

All I have to say is, playing through both of the games non-stop was one of the best weeks of my life. Gummi ship in TWO is MUCH better than in one. I didn't even bother in one. Just tolerate the early game, and you'll get to the good stuff soon.
