Retro Characters or Recent Characters?

Everyone obviously has different opinions on who should be in Brawl, but which characters deserve to be in Brawl more?

We have characters like Little Mac, Balloon Fighter, and Mach Rider...

...but we also have characters like Bowser Jr., Krystal and Captain Olimar.

More new characters? More old ones? Balance the number of characters on both sides?

Honestly, balance the numbers. There are some good old choices and some good new ones. Personally though, the only one of the old ones you listed I'd like to see is Balloon Fighter, but I suppose Lil' Mac could be good.

I think its more of a balance because old characters still continue to be new characters. And retro characters can still be renewed to be recent.

They have to have a balance between the two though I think its sort of leaning toward the recent characters as they have new costumes etc.

i vote for half and half as well because it would be fun pitting classics like lil mac against new characters like krystal

plus some characters qualify as both, mario, link, samus, donkey kong

I lean way more towards retro, probably because those are the characters I grew up with, and seem so much more charming. There's a few cool recent characters, though. Olimar or Viewtiful Joe or something, I wouldn't mind seeing them hopping around on the Smash battlefields. But I'd be way happier with a Belmont, Sonic, Megaman, Balloon Figher, Mach Rider, etc etc.

I think it should be an evenly divided combination of retro characters, new characters, and what I'll refer to for now as "timeless characters." I mean, Smash Brothers as I see it is basically a big pile of Nintendo fanservice in fighting game form. It makes sense for them to both acknowledge their rich gaming history as well as highlight their up-and-coming stars. So I imagine it being something like 60% timeless characters (Mario, Luigi, Kirby, Link, etc), 20% retro (Pit, Little Mac, Ice Climbers, etc), and 20% newer people (Olimar, Krystal, E. Gadd, etc). As long as the roster is unique and varied, I'll be happy.

Well obviously the majority of the roster will be made up of the main characters from all the big games(Mario, Link, DK, Snake, ect...). The rest could be split pretty evenly between newer supporting characters(like Krystal) and older nostalgic characters(like Little Mac).

Waluigi's kinda teetering on the line between new character and timeless. He's been in a LOT of games and this will be his third console generation. Granted, all of those games were spin-offs, but they were popular games nonetheless.

I guess for now I'd put him in the "new" category. If Nintendo finally got their act together and put him into a non-spinoff title he'd probably make the jump for me.

....but we're not here to debate Waluigi, that's what the Waluigi thread's for.

While may have shown up in Mario Tennis, he didn't really start being using until Mario Party 3, which was released in May 2001. Melee was released in Dec. 2001. So, relatively speaking, he is newer.

i would like to see them both, although i wouldn't cry if ice climbers were missing in the new game, although i need to see a new model for IC before i start nerdgasiming all over the place because of how kick *** they would look.

and i hope they balance out new and retro series into smash

If you´re including "obscure" in the Retro category, yes, I would fill Super Smash Bros. with the Retro category and only include vital characters aside from them (Mario, Kirby, Samus, Link, Pikachu, Fox, etc.). But realistically speaking (as well as being fair) I think that the 60/20/20 split posted earlier is great.

Balloon Fighter would be a tight character, but how would his moveset be? And he always stays in the air with the balloons, so it would be weird...

but, i think that newcomers will be retro and recent, but the majority of them recent. this is because retro characters have been surprise characters, like ice climbers, G&W, and now pit. sakurai can't throw in too many, or it will ruin the surprise element. that being said, the roster will hold more recent newcomers like olimar, lucario, and krystal.

oh, and i'm not anti-retro, just for the record...
but retro characters like balloon fighter and mach rider have been supported on these boards, and i just can't see them being playable. i have a feeling similar retro characters will become ATs.

as much as i would LOVE to see balloon fighter and lil' mac as characters, they (sadly) are more likely to be put in as assist trophies. I'm not anti-retro, i love the rets. my distribution would be 60% timeless, 25% new, 15% rets.
