Hey guys, I was lucky enough to get approved on using Melee as my topic for a research paper! Not sure what exactly my topic is going to be, I have a few snowballs but nothing substantial. Any ideas on a topic and thesis guy? Much Appreciated!

Edit: I'm thinking Community's growth, tech skill doesn't determine a player, the gods are dying off, psychological game is just as important as tech skill, or an individual is the best player of all time.

Reaction time and its limits when playing Melee. Would be quite challenging to do this properly though, I expect.

Lol wow. Lots of places you could take this. It would definitely be cool to go into the mental aspect of melee and the general mentality of melee players. And put everything game-related in layman's terms as much as you can. Good luck, could have some fun.

You could do an experiment to calculate the average force of a Rest in Newtons per Percent.
We know the mass and size of pokemon because of their pokedex entries, which we could use to measure distance on the stage and also to calculate the momentum of a launched pikachu.
Battlefield is basically in space, so we can say there is no air resistance, meaning that the only force acting upon the pikachu is gravity.
Because gravity is entirely in the vertical direction, we know that the horizontal velocity of the pikachu is constant after the initial impulse of the rest.
Using Ft=mv we can deduce the x-component of the average force of the rest, assumimg that it acts upon the pikachu for one frame (.017secs).
Then we can find the magnitude of the force by dividing the x-component by the cosine of the initial launch angle.
This experiment should be performed at varying initial percents until a relationship can be established between the force of the rest and percent.

Theoretically this could be used to calculate the mass of every character in melee.

Thats a great opportunity. I'd probably do it on character meta and evolution of the tier lists over time. Its almost like an ecosystem/food web if you think about it.

Example: New tech is discovered for Jigglypuff. Puff does better in tournament, encouraging newcomers to main her. Because Puff beats peach, the number of peach players fall slightly due to higher quantity of puff. Conversely, because fox beats puff, the number of fox players increases because the ecosystem can now support more fox players.

The gods aren't anywhere close to "dying off" and while you don't need perfect tech skill to be good, clean tech skill is still required for being good.

If it's a Pysch class, look at the stress melee (and other fighting games) have on different levels of players. M2K and PPMD seem really impacted, so it could be cool to try and understand why this happens. For a Soc, maybe how the community has evolved through various hurdles.

I'd look at the perception of different characters at different points in the games life, of course ending with the only option being Fox and rps getting wacky.

But really it'd be pretty cool to analyze why Sheik was at the top for so long, and why falco jumped around so much early on.

Might wanna limit it to mid tiers and above though, as low tiers really don't matter.
