Replays what to change

I haven`t seen anyone discuss replays here so I think I will create this thread. If you forgot what replays are they were basically well a replay of the match you just did. You could save them after the match was over. The problem I saw with them was that they were`t very flexible. You could only record 3 minutes of a match. Most matches last longer than that. I think they should be at least 10 minutes or longer. Also you could`t play them on anywhere but your wii. What do you guys think?

Really, if they just increase the time limit for how long a replay can be (like the Project M folks did), I'll be happy. Youtube integration would be nice, but I'm not all that fussed. I do have a capture device after all.

I'd like it if you could change camera angles, camera positions, lighting, and share the replays with the Miiverse community.

As long as we can see nametags during the playback and the limit is at least 8 mins i'll be satisfied.

The first thing is a major overhaul of what exactly "replays" are in the Smash Bros. context.
In Brawl, replays aren't actually video files, they're a series a inputs for CPUs to follow. It's basically a reenactment done by CPUs. This whole system should be revamped so that replays are actually replays. I know that this would require taking up more digital space, which was the original intent with handling replays they way they were in Brawl, but I'd like to be able to not rely on my crappy capture device to record anymore. Just have actual video files be saved onto the Wii-U or an SD Card.
With that out of they way, onto a few specifics.
Replay length, of course, must be extended. I'd say eight minutes is fair, if not just only limited to how much digital space is available at the time.
Name tags should be left in the replay. I like to remember who was in the replay. And since I collect a lot over time, it gets hard to remember.

8-10 min replays
Name tags
Either save it as a .mp4 (.avi sux) or create a site/program for people to convert .bin replays into .mp4.

Just increase the time limit to about 10 minutes and make it like Mario Kart 8.

The two biggest improvements replays need are a considerably longer time limit ( I do wish it could be unlimited, but anything longer than 5 minutes is good enough for me) and, as Shrooby stated, make them actual replays. I can say from experience that inputs the game attempts to memorize for the CPUs do not always function properly, so the replay will not imitate the match correctly. Sometimes the CPUs will start performing actions that did not occur in the match, often behaving bizarrely (like attacking randomly, committing suicide etc) this REALLY needs to be changed.

There are a ton of other ways that replays could be improved, but those two changes are the only ones that are really necessary IMO.

Mario Kart 8 also saves replays by recording inputs. When you choose to upload it converts it into a video. If Smash 4 does it like that it would be fine.

But yea just make it like Mario Kart 8 and allow uploads of full matches and not just highlights. And increase the time limit. Maybe include a video editor to add slow-mo and camera angles.

Was that a reference to the guy who did Smash Bros movesets backgrounds for Melee waaaay back in the day? Or am I reading too much into it?

While I do know exactly who that is...
no, it's not. I just have a capture device that I would describe as "crappy." :p

I figured I'd ask, that was a nostalgia trip haha :)

As for the actual topic, I think we've seen hints of such a camera. Very minuscule hints at that, but hints. Just like in the Mario Kart 8 previews and trailers, we've gotten some indication of a camera feature with the way the trailers were made. Perhaps a similar thing is had here too. I mean, in the Direct (And past directs) there's alot of planned movement and camera pans/zoom ins that is above and beyond what Brawl trailers had done (I mean, there was a bit of this but nothing major.)
