Replacing Expansion Stages

I recently download the Classic Expansion for P:M 2.6 which many of us had been highly anticipating, and in trying to become more familiar with Brawl modding I have been designing a custom build for my use which I may share with the community at some point in the future.

Two stages in particular I hope to include are Bowser's Castle (http://www.smashboards.com/threads/bowsers-castle.331918/) and Mewtwo's Stadium (http://www.mediafire.com/?atzzz7zvjpdeh). Bowser's Castle is meant to go over Mario Circuit, and I have been able to correctly execute that replacement such that the stage plays perfectly normal, and all the appropriate icons are in the right place. Though I renamed STGKART.pac and st_kart.rel and the Mewtwo's Stadium equivalents to replace certain custom expansion stages from the CEP 5.4m (in the format STGCUSTOMXX.pac and st_customxx.rel) as well as added the appropriate icons and brstm files, the game freezes upon their selection from the stage menu.

Not sure if this is relevant, but I have BrawlBox v0.66b and have a fair understanding of what files to locate and replace for different components of the game (or maybe I don't; who knows?).

I hope it was appropriate to start my own thread for this circumstance, and I hope even more that I'm not missing some super easy-to-find FAQ with my answer. I've got a lot of tabs open on the subject and it's possible I've already overlooked the answer. Any help offered would be most appreciated!

P.S. These are a few other questions that are related to the subject matter that may or may not be easy answers. I'll probably research them on my own time eventually, but if anyone feels like responding I would again be grateful.

1. What exactly are module .rel files, and why are they important?
2. Some stages have more music slots than others. Is there a way to reassign/reorder/copy these lists to other stages, such as another default Brawl stage? If so, is it related to the Stage-Dependent Song Loader code?
3. Before the CEP 5.4m was released, I was attempting to edit the GCT codeset independently by combining elements from the 2.6 codeset as well as the 2.5 CEP codeset (Phantom Wings' Stage Expansion code 2.0 and Eternal Yoshi's Maxed-Out SSS). The closest I got was having the stage menu load and then the game freezing. Any thoughts what I might have been doing wrong? I have CodeManager and GCTEditor installed.

EDIT: I believe I have found an answer, if not the answer. It seems to be that some custom stages require replaced rel files where others do not. If anyone can shed more light unto this, I'd be grateful. Questions 2 and 3 are still relevant, however.

When you want to replace a different stage, you have to change one byte in the .rel file to match the stage ID. The ID for STGCUSTOM## is 00, but Mario Circuit is 05 or 06 or something like that. So when you replace a stage, use lakora.us/rel (my site) or the Stage Switcher program to make a new .rel file for that combination.
There might be a way to add more music slots, but I think it conflicted with another code when I tried it. Not sure if that's the case anymore, though.

Thanks! In recent weeks I've been finding many different resources/tutorials/general advice to improve my abilities and have you to thank for a good portion of them.
