Smash Lord
I have been a member of these boards for a while now and ever since I first joined there is one thing that almost everyone agrees on. That thing is the idea that bigger franchises get more reps. I have made this thread to express why I think the rep system as we know it is flawed.
First off, personal bias. Alot of people on the boards have their own favorite franchises such as Mario, Zelda, Star Fox and so on. Now because they personally like this franchise they believe that that franchise should have alot of characters. The same is true for the opposite, if you don't like a franchise then you think that franchise should get less characters. This leads to conflicting opinions and therefore can not be used as a real argument in a debate.
Next on my list is past experience. Since in the original smash and melee the big franchises got more characters most people think it will be the same in brawl. This is flawed logic because smash 64 and melee where heavily influenced by Nintendo execs who cared about nothing else but advertising money makers. Sakurai is not like that, he cares about making the best game possible and that includes not being biased toward big franchises and instead giving smaller franchises the exact same treatment as the big ones.
Thirdly is the idea that only playable characters count as reps. I don't fully understand the idea behind this one. How come pokemon can have hundreds of pokeball pokemon and like 6playable characters? Shouldn't everything from a franchise count as repping it? This one never made sense to me.
Next is the idea that characters should be added and denyed access to brawl because of their franchise of origin. This one is stupid beyond belief. It's idiotic to add some stupid side character when other franchises haven't even gotten the main characters yet. How would you guys feel if instead of adding some incredibly awesome and important character like say Ridley they added some retarted side character like Daisy just because the Mario franchise is bigger.
No, I'm not saying that the big franchises don't deserve alot of characters. I'm saying that instead of adding stupid pointless side characters just because they are from a big franchise we should be focusing on adding the important characters from all franchises first and then if there is room later add the less important characters.
P.S. NO FLAMES! For every time I get flamed, I shall kill you.
