Rep system flawed?

I have been a member of these boards for a while now and ever since I first joined there is one thing that almost everyone agrees on. That thing is the idea that bigger franchises get more reps. I have made this thread to express why I think the rep system as we know it is flawed.

First off, personal bias. Alot of people on the boards have their own favorite franchises such as Mario, Zelda, Star Fox and so on. Now because they personally like this franchise they believe that that franchise should have alot of characters. The same is true for the opposite, if you don't like a franchise then you think that franchise should get less characters. This leads to conflicting opinions and therefore can not be used as a real argument in a debate.

Next on my list is past experience. Since in the original smash and melee the big franchises got more characters most people think it will be the same in brawl. This is flawed logic because smash 64 and melee where heavily influenced by Nintendo execs who cared about nothing else but advertising money makers. Sakurai is not like that, he cares about making the best game possible and that includes not being biased toward big franchises and instead giving smaller franchises the exact same treatment as the big ones.

Thirdly is the idea that only playable characters count as reps. I don't fully understand the idea behind this one. How come pokemon can have hundreds of pokeball pokemon and like 6playable characters? Shouldn't everything from a franchise count as repping it? This one never made sense to me.

Next is the idea that characters should be added and denyed access to brawl because of their franchise of origin. This one is stupid beyond belief. It's idiotic to add some stupid side character when other franchises haven't even gotten the main characters yet. How would you guys feel if instead of adding some incredibly awesome and important character like say Ridley they added some retarted side character like Daisy just because the Mario franchise is bigger.

No, I'm not saying that the big franchises don't deserve alot of characters. I'm saying that instead of adding stupid pointless side characters just because they are from a big franchise we should be focusing on adding the important characters from all franchises first and then if there is room later add the less important characters.

P.S. NO FLAMES! For every time I get flamed, I shall kill you.

Because they're items. You can't play as items, so them counting as reps is silly.

Also, Major char + minor franchise > Minor char. + major franchise

as the wise parrothead once said, major characters from minor franchises are better than minor characters from major franchises. I really dont think any franchise besides mario, kirby, metroid, zelda, and pokemon deserve more than 2 reps. they should really focus on gathing more unique and different franchises instead of already established franchises. especially retro/japan-only characters, since it would help increase thier popularity and make more games for them. however, putting in a character from an already repped franchise would help it no more or less than the main rep.

Yet your probably one of the first people to say Smashville can't be Animal Crossing's only rep.

I've personally always been under the impression that the bigger franchies will each get one (two at most) new reps.

Example: Mario, Dr. Mario, Bowser, Luigi, and Peach all represent Mario in Melee. Doc is not likely to return so that takes it down to four. By this logic, it is safe to assume that Mario will get at least one new character to take the Mario franchise back to five, and, thus, adding a new character (B.J.) without taking up more space. However, I honestly believe that Mario will get six (Toad or Waluigi are my guesses.)

With Jigglypuff and Mewtwo , the Pmon franchise will be good to go at six (to tie it with Mario if another is added.) Worst case is that they take out Jigglypuff to keep it at five.

As for LoZ: Link, Ganondorf, Zelda, Shiek, and Young Link. Pull out Young Link and add in another character (Midna) to keep the number the same while also introducing new characters. In the (unlikely) event that Shiek is removed, they can add another character (Vaati.)

Star Fox, I feel, is big enough to get three (maybe four) while Metroid (although also deserving of four) is scraping the bottom of the barrel for characters (see ZSS) so only three are likley.

Fire Emblem seems likely to get two (three tops) and DK only needs two (K.Rool is pathetic.) Earthbound also looks like it's getting two (unless Ness IS taken out [*cries*.])

Every other franchise only needs one.

Exactly why Star Fox deserves four reps :D Fox, Falco, Krystal and Wolf are perfect for Brawl XD

I also used this point when in a debate about AC characters. Once people saw the AC symbol they immdiantly thought that there HAD to be an AC playable character. But having a playable character isnt the only way to represent a franchise. Why do some people fail to see that? I do want an AC charactr and if I had to choose, I'd choose Tom Nook. But the icon doesnt guaranteed anything.

There is a quote by McFox I would like you all to read about this whole apparent "Rep" thing...

He blows it apart completely...

This is why I hate the rep system. Adding characters only because of their franchise of origin. Outside the tri-force three there is almost no Zelda characters who really deserve to be playable except for maybe Y.Link and Tingle yet people continually talk about how Zelda deserves alot of reps so they say stupid characters who really shouldn't be playable should get in like Midna.

Ew, Tingle. But, it is the same with Mother 3 and Star Fox, people say Star Fox should get more characters just because it's more popular, but that is not the case. I think they should include all the characters that are really significant to the plot. IMO Mother 3 series deserves as much reps as do StarFox series. And I said well, Pikmin is more popular then Mother 3 but should it have more PC's?

Even though the Donkey Kong series sells much much better than both Kirby and Metroid...

Because we saw how Ness skyrocketed the popularity of the earthbound series, I mean I love being able to play it and that new Ice Climbers sequal was fabulous

however, putting in a character from an already repped franchise would help it no more or less than the main rep.
No unique characters can never ever come from a main franchise, they must all come from obscure games that nobody remembers or cares about but everybody loves so they look smart.

I wouldn't worry too much about how others arrange their roster predictions Numa, as it will have no effect on the game. Sakurai will decide what he feels is best, regardless of what we mere mortals believe should happen. So if people make predictions that turn out to be false, there's no harm done. Roster speculation is just for fun, nothing more.

The purpose of this thread was to show why people who say X franchise should get Y amount of characters because of how big and recent it is are ignorant. I know that the rosters people make on this forum will have no effect on the characters in the game but if I can show people a flaw in their logic maybe we can get a prediction list on here that is actually right for once.
