CRTs are pretty much the best for video games since they have zero input lag. Especially for game a like Melee since it requires great precision.

Since you say it's an HDTV CRT it should have component inputs which makes the game look amazing. Assuming you have component GCN cables.

HD TV CRTs often have lag. I would pass on it, but testing it won't hurt I guess. Maybe you can get a player that's more experienced with lag to test it out with you before deciding on it?

You sure it has lag?

I game on a Sony GDM-F520 which supports 1536p but only got 0.3 frames of lag when testing (taking human error into account that basically means 0).

Okay so after doing more research it actually depends on the TV itself. Some HDTV CRTs will upscale 480i/480p signals to 1080i which will add lag. And some of them have post-processing effects which add a lot more lag (some you can't turn off).

The monitor I have has none of those.

So I would recommend getting an SD CRT for Melee, or better a PVM or BVM monitor for the best picture quality.

Sadly I just moved to Okinawa so I'm the most experienced guy I know here. My copy of melee should be here in a week or so, I just don't want to miss out on any of the CRTs that are being sold on bookoo right now (there's some nice 27-inch sony/samsungs.)

I have a 24" BenQ that I've been playing on with Dolphin, but I want something bigger to play on with my friends (with a real gamecube as well.)

I have two Sony GDM-F520 too, they are excellent and do not have any lag*. They are, however, no HDTVs. They are PC monitors and, as such, do not have any of the laggy post-processing that HDTVs have (since PC output is already in the high standard of progressive RGBHV that CRTs ideally require).

I was referring to HD TVs usually having lag. PC CRT monitors are no subset of these, so naturally I was not implying that CRT PC monitors had lag.

*Most GPU RAMDACs have a delay for the analog output over digital outputs of 0-1 frames. For Wiis and Gamecubes set to 480p60 output, this is no problem since they output digitally from the start.

Edit: Here's a first-hand experience from somebody who had an HDTV CRT that lagged quite badly: https://www.reddit.com/r/smashbros/comments/2zliks/lag_on_a_widescreen_hd_crt_melee/cpk3gqc

I personally don't want to ever buy one of these. They are heavy, rare in Europe, hard to get rid off and lag probably. So I won't be able to lag-test them ever, probably. Sony PVM (20L5, 14L5, 20M7MDE all take 480p) and GDM (especially the F520) are my highest recommendations for Melee lagless CRT monitors.

Sorry if I'm being a pain, but these are 3 of the best ones in my area.

As you can see they're all super cheap, I just don't know which model would be the best. My heart usually goes for Samsung, though.
All I can say is test them first. The first two seem more likely to not lag to me than the third.

I have two larger late-era CRT TVs (without component inputs, but with some post-processing) and they seem to lag. The Samsung one (non-flat, about 23") is better than the Panasonic (flat, also about 23"), but I'm not sure if it is really lag-free. I think I have the necessary equipment to test it now, though.

Do you have some sort of warehouse where you keep all these TVs? (Is it where you put the controllers and frame data?)

Seriously though, thanks for your input. I'll go check out the Samsung and JVC tomorrow.

I have a small house with four rooms and a basement. I host tournaments sometimes, so I have 14 CRTs scattered among the rooms. Half of them are 480p capable.

Maybe ask in your local Japanese forum if there is a smasher in Okinawa who's good at telling lag from a monitor. Maybe someone has time, it would spare you the effort of carrying it twice in case it lags.

If you want large CRTs I heard Sony Trinitrons are quite good. I haven't lag tested one though.
