I have found some great ways to reduce lag in online play from extensive research online and trial and error. I have gone from unplayable lag for days to near perfect matches now with these steps.

1. Plug your system into power while playing online so the 3ds does not have to focus on power consumption and can focus on the wi fi connection.

2. Turn off all wi fi devices even if they are not in use. That i pad, vita, phone, or anything with a wi fi connection is taking down your signal by just being in stand by. Turn them all off completely for the best connection.

3. Make sure your router is in a nice elevated open area of your living area to ensure a clean broadcast of your signal.

4. Sit close to your router that is broadcasting your wi fi. I found that sitting in my chair that was just slightly behind a corner wall area of the same room just 15 feet away was still not close enough. The couch litteraly 1 foot from the router providedal a world of difference since the signal did not have to bounce all around the room to reach me.

5. Do not use the microwave.

6. Try to find friends online to play matches with since the connection to those matches are better then playing randoms.

Let me know with a message if you add me and I hope this provides you with a better training environment online!

I don't know either
Does locations also affect the connection ? For example I live in Swiss, if we fight together are we going to have lag since our nations are far from each others ?

Im sure it does some what but when the game was out in Japan and some Americans were playing the import copy and alot of them had no issues playing with them over seas and actually reported it to be more laggy when playing other Americans.

Good tips, but that microwave one shouldn't be a problem. I mean, yeah, you will get some interference, but so long as your router or your 3DS is not nearby it, then you will be fine.

But man, I really wish we could get IEEE 802.11ac routers out right now. Those things are sexy as hell.

I've heard of a few of these tips but I haven't tried a handful of the others.
Tried them out earlier today/"yesterday" and managed to play with friends from different countries (specifically Australia and Japan while I live in the U.S) in matches that felt practically lagless! Thank you very much~

I've always played lagless with a connection from EU to NA when playing with friends. Strangely enough I sometimes get lag spikes when playing with a friend of mine who lives about 2km away. We both have a solid connection (me at 50mbit/s, his is 32mbit/s). That makes me wonder if the lagginess of games is really due to connection properties or just bad configuration / code / drivers.

These may be useful in For Glory, as I do get some bad matches there (though some are BEYOND saving).

Mostly though, I get perfect matches, so these tips will help the frequency of them for me, so thanks!

No, for some reason connecting from anywhere for me is fine so it should be for you too! I think it takes as much power to connect far away as it is close by, odd as it sounds.

Cool vase avatar.

Bump, it be sweet to keep a sticky on this thread, honestly this is very some nice tips for anyone who aren't aware of the type connection needed for the game.

It should be made more aware. Seeing how the online mechanics of Smash works; improving this issue in this manner just doesn't help one's self, but the online community as a whole, as well.
