Recording video input from monitor?

I play Smash on the same monitor I use for my PC. I just use the HDMI cable from my Wii U, which plugs into the back of the monitor.

I am wondering if there is any way to record this input on my computer, or do I need a dedicated capture card?

Capture card.

Your PC and Wii U both send signals to the TV. They receive none from it, so they can't exactly communicate.
