Hey Fellow Lucas Players,

I've been lurking this here parts for a while, and I felt like I really need some advice on how to play Lucas better, or things I can do to improve. Normally, I've just been winging it and doing my own thing with help from the advance techs thread and some tips (Tyr is the big inspiration). So, here is my (what I think) best vid of my Lucas in action. Unfortunately it's not a singles vid, but it's doubles tournament and it's the Finals. Enjoy. And be constructive, critical, whatever. Modesty and honesty and reality is good for you.

Edit: If you haven't noticed, I'm really proud of the video. I'm new to this watching myself play well thing. Normally, I got confidence issues with my playing.

Edit 2: I prefer to go by Oats when it comes to Smash stuff. :)

Glad to hear I inspired someone : )

It's kind of hard to get an accurate portrayal of how someone plays by a free for all. You can get away with a lot of things with 4 players that you couldn't one on one. For a free for all I have to say you're getting way more into the fray than you need to. Lucas is amazing at 4 player matches. Spam PK Fire like crazy and occasionally throw in a PKT2 across the stage. You'll almost always hit atleast someone. Full hop Dairs will get you a long way as well since you're pretty much guaranteed to get someone and then just follow up with a Fsmash or Dsmash. Abuse the stick like crazy at close range. It's fast enough and long enough that with all the distractions you'll get a ton of easy kills. If you stay back you can spam PK Freeze as well and rack up some nice damage without putting yourself in any real danger.

Lucas has an excellent matchup against Dedede. You can PK Fire spam him like crazy and basically stay out of his range the entire time if you're careful. You handled this pretty well but you could have played more cautiously and taken fewer risks. When edgeguarding Dedede you're better off using Usmash, Dsmash and Bairs because of how huge he is and how his recovery works. PK Thunder just isn't necesary against him. You got a nice spike on him earlier in the match because of how easy he is to hit with Bair.

The biggest thing I notice about your playstyle that needs to change is that you roll too much. There's really no reason to roll as much as you are and against good players you're going to get punished badly for it. When you do have to roll keep in mind NEVER ROLL TOWARD YOUR OPPONENT. Always roll away if you do decide to. This applies to rolling from a fallen position as well. You play pretty intelligently for the most part but you're a little overagressive at times. In a one on one situation I would suggest that you hang back more and rely less on short hop aerials and more on full hop aerials such as full hop double Fair and full hop Dair fastfalled. Learn to PK Fire spam as well. The goal is to initiate PK Fire as close to the ground as possible to have the least lag possible.

Just so there isn't confusion, it was a doubles match, not an FFA. The snake was my partner. But if you were just talking about 4 people on the stage, then that makes a little bit more sense, thanks for the criticism. The last 30 seconds was a roll-fest. I think we were both just pretty nervous. Good stuff though.

Oh sorry. For some reason it didn't look like teams to me.

He rolled appropriately in some cases, like to dodge and approach through a called projectile. That PK Thunder straight up was disgusting awesome!

When you're edgeguarding DeDeDe at high percents enough percents to d-throw kill, just wait airdodge through his landing attack and take your free grab kill (about 170). You can also PKT2 or PK Freeze him in da face for freesauce. I'd like to see a little more f-tilt and stick as well.

At The Time

I would love to be able to use my tilts more, and since I do b-stick, it's hard to smash (as well as tilt) when under pressure. Sometimes it just comes out as a series of jabs in the wrong direction or a smash in the wrong direction or even a dash attack. I think it's something that affects many people, but when in the heat of the moment, I'm just not centered enough to be able to slightly tap in one direction, when I want it done quickly. I just jam, y'know?

Thanks for the tips though. I'll be practicing tonight. And yes, I really liked the PKT2 kill I got off the Dedede. :)

You shouldn't smash when under pressure; save your tilts for those, since they come out quicker and relieve you more reliably. Smashes with Lucas are for mindgames and punishment (since all of his smashes hit like a truck to some degree).

Oh! My only real complaint was at the beginning of the video you had a roll-scuffle with Marth. You could've ended that REALLY fast with a simple nair.

Also: NASTY PK Thunder kill at 2:35.

Tons of helpful advice everyone! I've been trying to slow down my game considerably and overall try to keep a level head as I play. More tilts for days!
