So, I am new to this site (and the game).

From what I have been reading, on here and other places, the controls and gameplay for Super Smash Brothers Brawl and Super Smash Brothers Melee are completely different.

I have really only been playing Melee over my friends house every now and then, but I was wondering if I should buy Melee and practice on it in order to help me play Brawl so I can be fairly good at it?

The controls are:
NumChuck/Wii remote
wii remote sideways
classic controller
Gamecube controller

So getting to learn the moves on melee ( they could be different on brawl) will help. you can always make the buttons set to something else

Im gonna be a GCC player though.

I actually have been reading his impressions, but primarily just to read about the characters.

I will start looking at the other aspects as well I suppose, although I really was unsure if it would help or not seeing as he makes a lot of references to how things were in Melee (even when discussing the characters), but since I do not know about Melee really his comparisons are not effective for me, and the point he is trying to make with them goes over my head.

EDIT: Oh and Golden Ike, I plan on using the Classic Controller, seeing as I hate the GC controller.

Thanks, and I have been keeping up with the Dojo.

I will probably try and get Melee. It probably can only help.

If you have never played melee or ssb 64, then getting melee will help you a lot. Just to understand how the game works. If you did play them b4, it will still be useful. Because you can play the basic things like classic, adventure, all stars, the events and many more. That will help you to get to know each character. And you can also play with friends.

People that played ssb64 b4 melee came were a lot better at start than those who started with melee. You can also try the advanced techniques, but since brawl is not melee, you can't make sure that they will be useful in it.

Don't get Melee because it will help you get better in Brawl.

Get Melee because it is one of the top five games of the previous generation.

Not different at all. You can set up your own controls as well as use the GCN controller.

Just get used to Brawl.
Why get familiar with Melee if a new game is coming out in about 4 months?
Get familiar with Brawl, with the controls of brawl.
It's not like you have to play it perfectly as soon as the game says "Go!".
I myself will probably do tons of mistakes. And I rarely read the instructions booklets.
I just learn from my experience with the game.

I'm going to cry if you don't get Melee.

It won't help you in Brawl as far as techniques go, but you'll learn how the smash series works as a whole much better and you'll understand some concepts that pertain to every smash game, such as chain throwing, setting up combos, and the like. You'll get better with spot dodging, rolling, teching, and other things like that that are going to be in Brawl. And the most important thing is that Melee will help you develop you strategic thinking and allow you to recognize opportunities and threats a lot better.

Plus, Melee is an amazing game. Let me know if you decide not to get it so I can start crying.
