Quick Question About Mains

I've been playing Melee for around a month competitively. I had played it a lot growing up but only casually. For the first couple weeks I played Fox, and learned how to shuffle, wave dash, dash dance, and other basic advanced techniques with the character. In the past week or so, I've begun to play as Falcon- and although I had more success playing against competitive friends with Fox in the past, I feel that I have better control over Falcon, better understanding of the character and his moveset, and just enjoy playing him more than Fox.

But even though I've been playing the game for such a small period of time and haven't really committed to a character yet, I've found myself attracted to the Ice Climbers. Normally, the response I would both expect and deserve from people here would be 'just pick the character you like the most'.

I have a problem deciding between these characters for a number of reasons. The biggest one is that while the Ice Climbers are intriguing and look very fun to play and powerful based on sets I've seen, they're so fundamentally different from the rest of the cast that I'm not sure it would be a good idea to learn the competitive game through them. ICs appear to be such unusual characters that it might be detrimental to play them even when I don't have all of the basic techniques down, especially if I ever decided to switch characters.

So would it be better to start playing competitively with Ice Climbers or Falcon? Please don't tell me to decide for myself- that's ultimately what I'll have to do. I'm more just asking for advice on which one would help me improve my understanding of the game the most, which one would just teach me more. I like both characters and I obviously have played both a little, and I'm having a hard time deciding. Again, I mainly think that the fundamentals of Falcon are more transferable to the rest of the cast than the fundamental of Ice Climbers. So help me decide based on which would be better for somebody newer to the game.

A more concise way to word this might be: I'm interested in Ice Climbers but new to the game. I'm also considering sticking with Falcon because I feel like the fundamentals I learn with Falcon would allow me to eventually switch to another character if I want to but the fundamentals of Ice Climbers appear so different that they wouldn't really let me easily switch- but I'm not sure about any of this and want some advice.

Falco is pretty awesome. In all seriousness, I really think you should main Falcon at first. Many IC beginners tend to go for wobbling way too much and just ignore all other aspects of their gameplay.

just pick the character you like the most :D

If you're not entirely certain about who you like best, there definitely is some merit to playing a more 'normal' character like Falcon over Ice Climbers. It is not impossible to switch away from one of the more 'unique' characters; e.g. Wobbles has a very good Mario as well, and for me personally my Falco is getting closer to the level of my Peach... but it takes tons of time and feels like you're pretty much learning the game a second time.

The risk of ics is everyone low level is free cause you will get free grabs and that means death. And everyone mid~high level will kill nana so you have to play against better people with a worse character whilst not really getting practice against people of your current skilllevel.
If you like sopo a lot as well you can totes main ics, if you only enjoy them for their play together don't bother and stick to falcon. You can also play 1 in tourneys and 1 in friendlies so you can still make the switch later. If you really suck at deciding.

Only you can choose who you play as. The best anyone else can do is give advice

Falcon has a very basic design to him and Ice Climbers are the polar opposite. If you have the patience and determination to practice on your own and learn complex tricks, you'll be able to play as Ice Climbers well. If you don't and just want to jump into games, Falcon is a much better choice for you. The way you practice will determine most of how well you'll be able to learn other characters. Learning Ice Climbers will teach you stuff specific to them and Falcon will teach you how to play smart and the risks of approaching

As a beginner, I would recommend falcon anyway if you really like playing him.
This is a dumb question, but even if I sink a lot of time into a character like Falcon are ICs still in the equation?

I think any beginner should put at least 6 months into 1 character before they look at branching out. It's not impossible to do. Top level players like Armada and PPMD have picked up other characters after playing one for such a long time. You can definitely pick up IC's, but only after you understand how the basics of the game (which you can learn with Falcon), translate into a new character.
