Hey Smashboards, hows it going?

I've been getting harassed by the ol' internet hate machine (4chan.org) recently for some things I said about hating items and scrubs and noobs like 7 months ago.

http://www.encyclopediadramatica.com/Dylan_Tnga

I tried editing that page, so I could at least get em to take the pics down but that proved to be a bad idea...

the site said:
Account creation from this IP address (70.52.19.191) has been blocked. This is probably due to persistent vandalism from your school or Internet service provider.
Which means they have my IP adress.

I was thinking I should probably change my IP, I dont use dialup so I think my IP is static. I plan to call my ISP tomorrow and ask them to change it because I dont wanna screw up my internet...

I was wondering though if anyone could answer a simple question :

If you have the IP adress of someone, with that alone are you able to hack into their system and mess **** up/delete files/ etc?

Im rather worried about this group of people as they have messed up the lives of others before me, I wish to take some precautions.

No, IP address by itself means nothing

Edit: Actually, they can probably find out where you live, although buying a new IP address would be dumb, as it's very very easy to find someones IP address. Anyone with some basic google knowledge can find out where I live, it's the same for everyone. So buying a new one would just be wasting money. It's like buying a new lock for your door when all the people do is go in through the window.

Thanks very, very much for the answer. I trust your opinion (cause smashers rock) and can ease my mind.

You may close this thread if you wish. :)

Okay, first things first, editing your ED article won't really do anything, If you edit it people will just put even more ridiculous stuff on there.

Second, there is really no way to "beat" /b/, I suggest changing your email address. etc.. and maybe just making a new account if you want the harassment to stop.

Third, the fox news report was over exaggerated, horribly, and I don't think you should have anything to worry about as long as you don't harass them back IE: baleeting their ED article on you.

Fourth, A cheap, and not always effective way of "changing" your IP address is using a proxy, just google it.

and fifth if you are really worried about someone getting on your machine, I suggest buying yourself Norton anti-virus and a router. Make sure to enable the router's firewall and if there is an option to block anonymous internet request make sure its checked. Also make sure you change and remember the routers password.

EDIT just saw eorlingas post

An ip and open ports from a port scan or the like may mean alot though. thats why I suggested the router with a firewall.

haha, there's always a way. I've almost got them bored with me, they forget easily. but I figured the ''vandalism'' on ED would get me hacked.

Mehhh Im not overly concerned on safety, I pretty much assumed this

Lol I think the kid in the fox video had his ''7 passwords'' hacked by friends of his who were also in anon.. or whatever. Point being, theyre not 1337 h4xors.

But ya thanks again for the advice.

Mmmm, isn't that way either...

With the IP, You can scan the ports of that computer, If it has at least one open (and without protection) you can enter the computer, and modify/delete/etc with a program for that purpose.

But nowadays, everyone has a firewall, the firewall 'blocks' those unused ports.

If you haven't a FireWall, consider installing one now
