Quick Physics Question

A wind is blowing from the west at an airport with an east-west runway. What direction should airplanes be travelling as they approach the runway for landing? Why?

I just got this question from my Physics teacher and I have two opposing trains of thought of the answer. If the plane goes against the wind, the wind could help it decelerate in order to land, but at the same time this could probably affect its stability. What is the right answer because I honestly don't know.

I thought planes landed in the same direction no matter what. Huh.

I have no idea about that question. I doubt the wind would destabilize the plane(it's a giant plane), so I'd say against the wind to help with deceleration.

They would land into the wind whenever possible. That way they maintain as much lift (airspeed) as possible while having a lower ground speed.

Don't make me think, whenever I think the room fills with smoke.
