Questions From A NEWB!

So, after not been able to play Melee for about 3 months, I've finally bought a controller and have been practising again. I regained all technical ability within like an hour, it was surprisingly easy to pick up -even after taking a break (I raged and punched my controllers, none of them worked :()

I have a few questions for you sexy Falco mains out thur:

1. I'm not quite sure how to phantasm/firebird stall, I'm guessing you just press the control stick away from the edge you're holding onto then do the move (let's just say I'm holding onto the left edge of FD, I'd just hit the control stick left then firebird/phantasm quickly?)

2. What level CPU should I train on for DI purposes? I've heard form many people different answers, such as 3, 4, 5 etc. So I was contemplating on just trying out every level.

3. Shortening Falco Phantasm? I ALSO haven't practised this yet, but I've been told I just have to hit B at a certain time right after the initial side-B? Is this right? I just want to clarify everything before I try them out.

3. I haven't really practised Isai dropping yet, and I WANT to learn this before even going to a tournament because I honestly hate watching Falco's that don't know hot to Isai drop, but I was wondering if there are any other methods of reducing laser lag then lasering after dropping down from a platform that I should know of?

4 (you're probably tired of reading these). I use the control stick for all of my aerials AND lasering, so I was wondering-what do you use? My control stick actually broke off once, and I blame lasers -.-

That's about it, for now. I'm sure I'll have MUCH more questions as I am a scrub in the learning process. Thanks.

i mean. The short answer is just don't do it. It's only a safe stall if you're 100% perfect. If you're just doing it to refresh invuln or something, though yeah, you're correct. I like to think of it as a quartercircle away->up and then B. It helps me time it, at least.
2. What level CPU should I train on for DI purposes? I've heard form many people different answers, such as 3, 4, 5 etc. So I was contemplating on just trying out every level.
i think 3 4 and 5 all Di similarly. The thing is, they won't DI falco combos in an instructive way. It's somewhat useful because they'll DI chaingrabs better than other levels but you can 0-death a level 3-5 CPU with the same combo over and over so it's not particularly helpful. Basically, practice movement and fluidity on your own and learn to follow DI against humans.
3. Shortening Falco Phantasm? I ALSO haven't practised this yet, but I've been told I just have to hit B at a certain time right after the initial side-B? Is this right? I just want to clarify everything before I try them out.
yes. What happens is there are... I think it's 5 frames while you're moving. If you press B during one of those frames, you stop moving there instead of going to the normal end of the phantasm.

3. I haven't really practised Isai dropping yet, and I WANT to learn this before even going to a tournament because I honestly hate watching Falco's that don't know hot to Isai drop, but I was wondering if there are any other methods of reducing laser lag then lasering after dropping down from a platform that I should know of?
i dont know what you're asking and it's not clear what you think Isai dropping is. Here's the thread:http://www.smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=273161

4 (you're probably tired of reading these). I use the control stick for all of my aerials AND lasering, so I was wondering-what do you use? My control stick actually broke off once, and I blame lasers -.-
i dont know what you mean by 'i use the control stick for lasering' because lasering consists of pressing B. So... um... yeah. do whatever's comfortable for you. I use the claw, jump almost exclusively with y and use the C-stick for most aerials, but plenty of people (notably: Isai, PP (?), Mango) use the control stick for aerials and stuff so... it's not important.

hope that helped some!

Well I mean, should I know any other type of drop other than Isai drop? And I meant to say I jump using the controller stick when lasering, I'm dumb :/

Thanks a lot!

um... you have to drop in lots of ways. If you read that thread, you'll find explanations of why isai dropping is optimal for lasering. Shield dropping and shai dropping are cute and sometimes useful but not high on the list of things to learn. Just dropping through plats normally is also pretty simple and cool a lot of the time.

and i mean there's no reason not to use the stick to jump other than the fact that it's hard and forces you to do a lot of stuff with your left thumb rather than distributing it across your fingers. use whatever method allows you to control the character best. if your lasers go in the right places using that method, by all means, carry on.

1. I'm not quite sure how to phantasm/firebird stall, I'm guessing you just press the control stick away from the edge you're holding onto then do the move (let's just say I'm holding onto the left edge of FD, I'd just hit the control stick left then firebird/phantasm quickly?)
I press away and roll it around the ring to the up position. I'm not sure cause I've been doing it for so long, but I think I actually jump with up on the control stick for a small moment before pressing B to make myself grab the ledge faster. Phantasm stall is mostly useless and flashy, although I guess you could spike someone with it if you wanted to be a boss. I would just stick to Firebird stall though, especially since Falco's stall doesn't hit people to save them like Fox's.

2. What level CPU should I train on for DI purposes? I've heard form many people different answers, such as 3, 4, 5 etc. So I was contemplating on just trying out every level.
I've just always used lvl 1s, and they seemed just as good as any other. Once you can do the standard dair-shine combo on FD, comps won't help much on anything else.

Yes, just press B again. I actually just spam B to get the really short phantasm with Falco, but for Fox I just time it. I'd recommend timing it, but I would say spamming B definitely helps me make sure I shorten because I've developed some crazy subconscious pattern of mashing.

3. Just to clarify, you don't have to Isai drop because of lasers. Lasers have no lag when you land with them; you have to Isai drop because of just regular landing lag. Isai dropping and, less often, ledge cancelling are really the only ways of reducing landing lag without shield dropping, and that's why they're used with lasers.

4 (you're probably tired of reading these). I use the control stick for all of my aerials AND lasering, so I was wondering-what do you use? My control stick actually broke off once, and I blame lasers -.-
I would recommending using the c-stick whenever you can. It's more consistent and you can DI without the constraint of your aerial. The only time I don't c-stick is for nairs (obviously) and for instances where I need to jump or press B in close proximity to the aerial. Like, if I shine->dair I will just keep holding down and move my thumb from B to A instead of from B to c-stick down. In the end, just go by what's most comfortable. Just make sure you are choosing one technique over the other because you are actually more comfortable with it, not because it's what you're used to.

I disagree. From my own experience practising shine-->waveland continuing combos has really helped my overall combo game and tech-skill.
At first I mostly practised on FD like you mentioned but now I only do it on platform maps as FD is too easy :p and getting isai drop lasers down and platform juggeling down is very good

Yeah, I guess I just never bothered using comps that much when practicing on the other neutrals (I too, almost practice exclusively on non-FD neutrals now). I would just practice shine wavelands and laser drops by myself.
