Questions about techniques on keyboard (short hop + cancelling)

I use fox and I've heard it's one of the hardest characters to short hop with, and I can do it every once in a while, but not regularly. I can one consistently but it's only slightly shorter than a full jump (like on hyrule, on the cheap part near the two walls where you get infinite combos, a full jump gets you back on the gray part, and I can do a short hop which just barely misses. the shortest hop doesnt get anywhere close). I can't do the shortest one consistently. I noticed it's easier when I'm standing still, but when moving around I almost never pull off the shortest hop.

When I played on N64 I never knew about short hopping so I never tried it, so iono if it's the keyboard or what.

Any tips? I just can't seem to press it softly enough, only when standing still i can get it 2/3 times.

Also for z cancelling, is it okay to be tapping Z a lot coming close to the ground.. Or are you supposed to press it once at the right time?

Thanks

I've been searching all through the forums for as many shorthopping threads as possible and it looks like I just have to practice more and more.. though I've been in training mode for a while.. Any tips?

I'm using the spacebar for the c button. I was thinking it's easier because it's so big, but maybe it makes me hit it harder.

I think you should use a letter key or # for c button, spacebar is harder (for me anyways)
As for z-cancelling, I would recommend practicing and finding the right timing to press z, not mashing it because you might mash it after you z cancel causing you to shield, which will obviously slow you down

anyway when I started I could barely do it as well, but after a few months I got the hang of it, and don't worry if you don't SH all the time, its actually good to switch up the jumps and not be so predictable

I used to have a hard time SH'ing as well. I use the space bar like you because it goes well with my control scheme. If at all possible, find a different button to use, you can still SH with the space bar, but it is harder to learn.

I find that SH'ing with the spacebar is all about pressing, not just fast, but very softly. If I press really soft + fast I can shorthop very well. I don't know much about fox but I know that certain characters have very high shorthops, like Samus.

As for Z cancelling, I'm in the middle of training myself to do it. The best way to learn how to short-hop is to find a character who has lots of aerial lag when they land. For example, DK or link or Samus, I use samus because she is my main. The key is to tap it right before you land, if you shield your pressing to late or your holding the button to long, its kinda like short hopping. Once you know how to cancel, thats only the beginning, you need to train yourself to automatically z-cancel virtually everytime you land, once you master Z-canceling, you will 2x as lethal.

I didn't even know it was possible to middlehop using the keyboard. It's not possible if you mapped your jump to Cbuttons, which I recommend doing. Don't stickjump, it's horrible ;)

Many times have I messed up because of trying any advanced tech on keyboard, besides it is harder to do so with fox, you can barely tell if you are Z-cancelling properlly a Dair to shine combo until someone breaks off of it.

I personally recommend getting a controller or a controller adapter, I have a PS/USB adapter for 2
controllers and getting the SH timed right feels like doing it on Melee, besides you can have 4-people matches with just a couple of adapters.

Street corners, dark alleys.
I physically cannot short hop with mine. Or dashgrab, either. The game also likes to randomly read my directional attacks as neutral attacks (B for down+B).

I'm thinking its my rom. I got project64 and such, and the rom was from the first site that popped up after a "ssb 64 rom" google search...but that's the only thing I can think of. Anyone got any ideas?

I use spacebar to jump too. It took me several weeks, or even months, to learn it with fox. Practice is the key. Now I shffl dairs and whatnot with ease, while my control scheme doesn't look anything like that of a controller. I did notice I sometimes have weird expressions on my face when shorthopping with fox... concentration must be very important.
