So I've been practicing Ledge teching by going into target practice with Falco and using his side B into the glowing thing right next to it. How many inputs of smash DI is needed on hitstun for you to tech the hit? What i usually do is after pressing B and holding the control stick to the side, I keep my control stick there and I don't i don't put it back to neutral (or move it at all), So I'm pushing side and then I press L before the hit and i tech it. What I'm confused about is how people say your supposed to hold L. I press it 20 frames before and i let go before hitstun and it still works. Also, I'm holding side on the control stick before i even press L and don't move it at all and it still works. Does this mean you only need 1 smash DI input and you don't need to time it, and you only need to time the L? I'm confused because it doesn't work on the other side of the thing that is glowing. The other question I had about ledge teching was if i'm in the middle of the stage (like on final destination) and I use my recover (If I miss the sweetspot for the ledge and I'm above the stage and not near the ledge) If marth is charging a neutral B or an f-smash could i tech it even though there isn't a wall around

It depends on how far away from the wall you are when hit.

Just FYI, this will cause you to only ASDI and not SDI at all.
What I'm confused about is how people say your supposed to hold L.
You don't have to hold L. You just have to hard press it once and only once. The tech input will buffer for 20 frames.
Also, I'm holding side on the control stick before i even press L and don't move it at all and it still works. Does this mean you only need 1 smash DI input and you don't need to time it, and you only need to time the L?
It still works because you're using ASDI which is sometimes enough to allow you to collide with the wall and tech. You always need to time the L input within 20 frames of colliding with the wall. You do not need to time ASDI since it happens automatically when you hold a direction when hit. You do need to time SDI so that you smash input during hitlag.

Whether or not ASDI alone will make you collide with the wall so you can tech depends on the knockback of the move (and therefore your percent) as well as how close to the wall you are. Since the movement of ASDI is combined with the knockback on the first frame of histun, if the knockback is too high, the ADSI will not move you far enough into the wall.

Whether or not SDI alone will make you collide with the wall depends on how close you are to the wall. SDI happens before knockback, so if you're close enough to the wall you can collide with it with only 1, maybe 2, SDI inputs. 3 or more is generally not humanly possible. SDI also moves your character twice as far as ASDI.
No. You have to collide with a wall.

I hope this makes sense. You can ask more followup questions if you're still confused. Also, Kadano made a great video about this stuff. It's rather technical but I suggest checking it out. You can find great resources like that and more at www.meleelibrary.com.

If you have access to 20XX 3.02, I suggest practicing wall teching with the added functions of the hack pack.
