(QUESTION) Walking instead of dashing

Hey so something I'm trying to get cleared up is why I walk out of a standing position when I mean to dash. This has happened to me for a while and it seriously affects my play, especially as a Falcon. I know this is kinda vaguely worded so I apologize I'm just having trouble clearly explaining the problem. I use an official Nintendo Game Cube controller, and it's pretty old so could that be an issue? Or am I just routinely screwing up how I jam the stick to do a dash? Any help is appreciated.

If your stick is extremely loose (i.e. it easily moves around with little to no force from your thumb) then it's probably the controller. If your stick is relatively tight, then I'm not sure what can really be causing it. The input to achieve a dash is not very difficult, even for beginner players. It's actually more common to see newbies dashing by accident when they mean to walk because of how sensitive the stick is. If possible, you should go to a tournament or find a local player or even just find a friend who has some old controllers lying around to compare, but I'm pretty sure it's just a bad stick. If you are able to upload a quick 5 second cell phone video demonstrating how loose your stick is it should be easy to confirm visually.

I think odds are, you're doing the input too early after your moves/wavedashes. During practice, try doing WD/aerial->dash and delay the dash input by like a second. If the problem persists, it might be your controller. If the issue goes away even when delaying the dash, you were probably just not precise enough with your input during your matches and need to work on that.

So I tried taking a video of my control stick but it won't let me embed the video but I can tell you the stick does move around a bit when I apply very little force, but nothing that really strikes me as substantial maybe like 2 or 3 millimeters in every direction... I do remember when I set up my controller for netplay the areas that it read for the control stick where it was responsive wasn't as far as it should be and I think one of the directions horizontally didn't make it out of the little ring it has in set up, so it could very well be an issue with the stick or I could just be off on my timing.

That could be the case I've had this trouble pretty much ever since I started playing more competitively maybe I'm just trying to go to fast for where I'm at as a player?

If you're only using it on your computer and not an actual Cube/Wii, then you probably need to set up the controller differently from how you currently have it. Idk anything about emulating Melee, unfortunately. Try searching around the Melee Workshop forum for tips on setting up your controller.

What adapter are you using? The official Nintendo adapter and the Mayflash 4-port adapter don't need any configuration because they read the inputs natively, meaning near perfect accuracy.
I can't recommend using a different adapter because they have input lag and don't have accurate inputs.

I use a mayflash adaptor but it still has me set it up its not a big deal for netplay cuz I dont play a lot of netplay so I just didn't know if there was a correlation I'm getting a new controller soon anyways so I guess we'll just have to see then

Is is a 2 or 4 port adapter? Only the 4 port one supports native input. If you have the 4 port one, make sure it's on WiiU mode and not PC mode. The 2 port one has the issues I talked about.
