Not being too experienced in the field of Melee, I never really understood why people use CRT's. Can someone please clear the air?

Crts have no lag, because they pick up signal faster for 4:3 games.
The aspect ratio isn't the reason why CRTs don't lag.

I made a post a while ago here (there will be better ones made by other people elsewhere, but this covers the reasons for lag); the bullet points are the immediately relevant section: http://smashboards.com/threads/overcoming-input-lag.362812/#post-17264246

@ Gr4pefru1t Gr4pefru1t , If you're going to play Melee consistently then getting a CRT is a big priority. Adjusting from long-term use of a laggy setup wastes time, and there's so much you can't really practice or that functions differently on a laggy setup anyway (both players have less time to react to visual stimuli).

When I switched from a laggy setup to a CRT, bearing in mind that it was after playing for 6-8 months on a relatively low-lag setup and with actively trying to adjust to the CRT, the timeline was something like:
• 1-2 days for everything to stop feeling uncomfortable.
• about a week for the game itself to feel pretty much normal, although while still doing things with the wrong timings because of the lag difference.
• about 2-3 weeks to stop obviously doing things with the wrong timings because of the lag difference.
• about a month to feel like I was fully adjusted.

I'm sure that the longer you play on a laggy setup the harder it will be to break the bad habits/muscle memory you build.
