Question regarding improvement

Ok so I've had Smash Bros ever since it launched and I played it on and off since that time. Here recently me and some friends have been playing online with each other for fun an all that. This has caused me to want to start getting better at the game.

However there are a few issues I seem to keep running into. I'll go online and play some for glory matches to get used to 1v1s but I always find myself feeling like the controls aren't tight enough. I seem to dash attack when I don't want to. I seem to jump when i may not mean to. I can never consistently short hop when I want to and usually end up over jumping.

Essentially it feels like I myself don't have enough control over my character.

Then another issue I have that is kind of compounded by the above issue is that I can't settle on who I want to main and get really good with. I'll want to play Pac-man, then I go to play him and I can't seem to ever get him to do what i want. Or I'll play just about anyone and I can never seem to make the character do what I want so I end up feeling like that character is too hard/doesn't fit my playstyle enough to learn them.

Are there any exercises or tricks that I could do to help me develop some muscle memory or something?

Simply playing with him and getting more familiar with him will help the most. If there's anything specific messing you up, it never hurts to just go into training mode and keep repeating it until your more comfortable.

The key is to simply practice, especially with a character you want to play as.

The more you keep playing the easier it'll be control-wise as well. Short hopping can be tough since it requires a gentle touch, just like tilts so you don't end up dashing. There's also guides on just about every character floating around the net that you can read on; however, you have to take the time to actually practice with them. You can even watch Youtube vids if that's more helpful to you than a written guide. After all, sometimes it's better to see them in play.

With practice comes experince. Just take your time and test your limits as well as various characters. You may be sursprised... You might main someone you least expected!

Is there anywhere online where I can see what all my movement options are?

As in shop, fair, bair, uair and all that? I know some of the terminologies but I've seen a few that weren't familiar to me so I imagine that there are things I can do that i may not know how to do or that exist.

I think there is a guide that explains just about every Smash term somewhere.

I believe I read one once when I wanted to learn some terms I didn't quite know myself. Just search the Forums here or via Google "Smash Bros U Terms" and I'm sure you'll find it. As for move options with characters I know there's some guides here that explain all their moves and how they can be used. Some are good, others could use some improvement so you might need to read more than one guide. That, or again just look for stuff via Youtube.

There's some good video guides floating around there about certain characters. Plus people even upload some For Glory play so you can see how others use said character. Just remember that guides will only get you so far. Don't forget to practice and use the things you learn!
